O. W. HUTGHINS.
BOOK AND MUSIC HOLDER. a No. 319,907. Patented June 9 1885..
WITNESSES I INVE NTOR ATTORNEY N4 PETERS. Phulvlhhogmpher. Waxhlngloni-DICB NITED STATES CHARLES W. HUTCHINS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO EDWIN C. BARR, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOK AND MUSIC HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,907, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed May 22, 1E84.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HUTOH- Ixs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and 5 State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book and -Music Holders, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to improvements in book-rests and music-holders combined, the object being to provide an improved device of the above-named character having a base which permits of placing it on a piano, if desired, and two independent sections of pivt5 otcd supporting-rack capable of being adjusted to different positions, and a spring leafholder and book-cover holders, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of-this speci- 2o fication, Figure 1 illustrates a book and music holder constructed according to my invention, showing the parts in the position which they occupy when in use and a book thereon. Fig. 2 shows the holder folded up, and by dot ted lines one of the positions other than that shown in Fig. 1 to which the racks may be adjusted.
In the drawings, A is the base of the book and music holder, having pivoted under each 0 end an arm, b, which arms are adapted to be turned rearward from the position they occupy in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1, to sup port the holder in an upright position when the weight of a book or music is brought to 5 bear on the racks c. The bars of said racks are pivoted to each other and to the base A at e e e, and are capable of being folded close to said base, as shown in Fig. 2, or raised up to the position shown in dotted lines, or to that 0 shown in Fig. 1, or of being set at an outward incline beyond the ends of the base, as may be desired, to accommodate books or musicsheets of various forms and dimensions.
(No model.)
()n base A are fixed two cover holdersfx, which stand away from the rear part of base A far enough to permit of putting the lower edge of the covers 1) of the book D between them and said rear part of the base, whereby the covers of the book are held steadily open and prevented from shutting against the leaves d of the book, thereby relieving the leafholder from any cover-pressure and making it easier to control their position.
The leaf-holder m consists of a wire yoke,
m, having its two ends attached to a shaft, n, and so formed as to reach upward and laterally over the lower part of the book-leaves d far enough to hold them open, as shown. The said shaft is arranged to turn in the stands to on. base A and to have a slight endwise 6o movement therein, and has coiled thereon a spring, 0, which drives it to the right, so that when the leaf-holder is swung forward away from the leaves d the adjacent end ofthe holder at will be engaged with the notch 2, whereby o5 the leafholder will be held away from the book. The holder m is freed from notch 2 by pushing it and shaft n to the left, and spring 0 then throws said holder over against the book and holds it in the position shown in Fig. 1. I
If desired, the base A may be made wide enough to dispense with arms I).
What I claim as my invention is.
A book and music holder consisting of the base A, the two separate racks c c, pivotally attached to said base and adapted to fold from the center toward the ends thereof, and vice versa, the arms I), pivoted to the base and adapted to extend rearward, the cover hold- 8c ers 00 m, and rotating spring leaf-holder at, substantially as set forth.
