Patented June 9, 1885.

UNITED STATES ROBERT c. BRYDEN, OF HAVEBHILL,
PATENT OFFICE.
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,880, dated June 9,1885.
Application filed February 20, 1855. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. BRYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Button- Hole Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to add to the convenience of cloth or fabric clamps for button-hole sewing-machines by providing means whereby the spring-depressed guide-pins of such clamps may be quickly and easily lifted I I 5 from the groove of the feedingwheel when the button-hole is finished. To effect this result I provide a lifting-lever with which the guidepin is in engagement, and by which it may be quickly raised when required, said lever being pivoted to an arm or bracket on the guidepiu post.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aplan view of a cloth-clamp embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
A indicates the base-plate by which the clamping-jaws are carried, and B is a hollow post attached thereto, through which post the guidepin 0 passes. The post B has an arm or bracket, b, to which is pivoted the liftinglever D, and to the top of said bracket is attached a spring, E, the free end of which is in engagement with the pin 0, the said spring serving to depress the said pin, and the latter being preferably provided with a flange, a, or other projection, near its top, beneath which the top or forward end of the lever D extends.
The post Bis provided at its top with a notch in which the lifting end or toe of the lever D fits, said lever, when not in use, being held in place between the bottom wall of said 0 notch and the flange c. A stop-pin, 1), serves to limit the lifting movement of the lever D.
By depressing the rear end of the lever D the guide-pin C may be quickly and easily lifted, thus obviating the inconvenience incidental to the clamps heretofore in use, in which the guide-pins are lifted by pulling upward on their heads.
I claim as my invention In a button-hole clamp, the combination, with the base-plate, of a hollow post having a notch at its top and an arm or bracket, a guide-pin fitting in said post and having a flange or projection, a lifting-lever pivoted to said bracket and extending into said notch beneath said flange or projectiomand a spring for depressing said pin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. BRYDEN.
