ATTORNEY Aug. 3, 1965 H. M. WILSON FOLDING SAWHORSE Filed Dec. 3. 1962 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent 3,198,286 FQLDING SAWHQRSE Homer M. Wilson, 414 W. 17th, Houston, Tex. Filed Dec. 3, 1962, Ser. No. 241,661 6 Claims. (1. 182-155) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a folding sawhorse.
It is an object of this invention to provide a sawhorse for use in construction activities, that is provided with folding legs, movable into one position to provide a sturdy and dependable support and into another position preparatory to transport or storage, providing a compact, easy to store, unit.
It is another object of the invention to provide a folding sawhorse that is a single, integral unit, the legs of which are quickly and easily moved into and out of folding position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts more particularly defined in the following specifications and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE .1 is a perspective elevational view of the device in one position.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective elevational view of the device in another position.
FIGURE 3 is an end view taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2 and shown partially in cross section, and
FIGURE 4 is a bottom view oi the device in the position shown in FIGURE 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the
numeral 1 designates the plate of the sawhorse, having the side members 2, 2 and end members 3, 3. A center beam 4 is countersunk at each end in the respective end members 3, 3 and is mounted on the under side of the plate 1. The side members 2, Zangle outwardly at the desired pitch and the legs 5, 6, 7 and 8 are pivotally mounted on the side members 2, 2, means for such pivotal mounting being as desired, such as the pins 9, 9, extending through a bore formed in the side member 2, the respective legs, and the separators 16, 11, the bore being at an angle of ninety degrees with respect to the outside surface of the side member 2, and being formed at the pivotal point of each leg, the bore being indicated as 12, and eX- tend-ing into the center beam 4.
Mounted on the center beam adjacent each leg are the locking wings 13, 13 which are provided with suitable tension means, such as the springs 14, to constantly urge the wings 13 into locking position. Each wing 13 is pivotally mounted onto the center beam 4 by means of the eyebolts 15 through which the bolt 16 extends, the bolt 16 being anchored to the center beam 4 by means of the brackets 17, 17. The outside longitudinal side margin of the wings 13, 13 tapers outwardly, so that the substantially triangular shaped wing 13 has its wide end abutting the legs.
When the device is in the position shown in FIGURE 2, for transport or storage, it forms a compact easily handled unit. When it is desired to use the sawhorse as such, the legs are moved into extended position, the longitudinal side margin of the legs bearing against the tapered portion of the wing, moving the wing pivotally on the bolt 16, until the outside margin of the leg passes the wide end of the wing 13, where the wing will drop back into original position, the wide end of the wing bearing against the leg, locking the leg in position. When each leg is so extended, the device is ready for use. When it is desired to again fold the legs, the wing locking each leg is manually raised, and the leg permitted to pass the wing 13 and move into folded position as shown in FIGURE 2.
3,198,286 Patented Aug. 3, 1965 "ice While the foregoing is considered a preferred form of the invention, it is by way of illustration only, the broad principle of the invention being defined in the appended claims.
