Description

LABEL Original Filed Dec. 12, 1962 3,197,898 LABEL Matthew B. Blish, Box 151, Oak Park, Ill. Original application Dec. 12, 1962, Ser. No. 244,177. Divided and this application July 22, 1964, Ser. No. 384,405
4 Claims. (Cl. 40-2) The present invention relates to a new and novel type of label especially adapted for use with packages and commodities. This application is a divisional of my copending application, Serial No. 244,177, filed December 12, 1962. Such devices are usually produced of fiat paper stock with indicia and design printed thereon and adhesively secured to a package or commodity, or are of flat paper card stock and attached to a package or commodify by means of a cord, wire, ribbon, or the like. The essential consideration is to secure a pronounced contrast of the indicia or design so that it will artistically stand out in a superimposed third-dimensional manner and thereby attract attention for point-of-sale advertising labeling, product identification, seasonal sales appeal combined with special designs, gift Wrapped packages, premium deal merchandising, and the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a label of this type of essentially different and integrally formed construction, whereby the designs, indicia, or other se lected portions of the label stand out in a unique and very decided contrast.
Still another object is to provide a label of this kind which is simple in construction and relatively inexpensive .to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part thereof and illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front side view of a cord securable label embodying the invention, conditioned for use.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary front side view of FIG. 1 in completely open position.
FIG. 3 is a rear side view of FIG. 2 illustrating a modification.
FIG. 4 is atop end view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view of FIG. 1.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings in which similarly numbered characters of reference indicate corresponding parts of the various views, the label is formed of flat stock, preferably paper card material. While the novel structure provides means for quickly and simply displaying an innumerable variety of trademarks, decorative designs, photographs, illustrations, and other printed reproductions in an attention compelling manner especially adapted for labeling merchandise and holiday gift packages, the die-cut feature selected to illustrate the invention represents a trademark in the formation of a royal crown reproduced upon the front side of the label and comprising a part of the label which shall be referred to as the projecting portion. As shown in FIG. 1, the projecting portion 13 is compactly retained in a substantially horizontally raised position over a part of the body portion 15 front side surface.
FIG. 2 illustrates the label of FIG. 1 in its open position and wherein the end of the projecting portion opposing its extreme free end is integrally formed to the outer edge of the intermediate section 16. The label is produced normally flat and in use, the intermediate section is folded inward to overlay a portion of one surface side of the body portion at the fold line 17 and the projecting portion is reversely folded at the fold line 18 to overlay the intermediate section. The front side of the body por- United States Patent 0 tion is provided an adhesive coating 19 positionally disposed so that all, or at least a portion of the adhesive coating is brought into alignment with the opening 20 of the intermediate section when the intermediate section is folded inward to the front side of the body portion and a part of the rear side of the projecting portion is thereby brought into contact with the adhesive coating through the opening of the intermediate section.
If desired, an adhesive coating may be applied to the projecting portion rear side as shown in FIG. 3 at 19a, positionally disposed so that all, or at least a portion of the adhesive coating is brought into alignment with the opening 20a of the intermediate section when the intermediate section is folded inward to the front side of the body portion and a part of the front side of the body portion is brought into contact with the adhesive coating 7 through the opening of the intermediate section.
It will now be seen that a highly pronounced thirddimensional contrast of the royal crown trademark design and the lower disposed body portion of the label is effected quickly and simply by the superimposed projecting portion over and above the intermediate section which creates a dual appearance of the trademark design and the label body portion being separately produced, although the entire structure of the label is integrally formed of a single unit of fiat stock.
While preferred embodiments of the invention are described herein and shown in the accompanying drawings in detail, other arrangements may be produced without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. It is to be understood that all matte-r contained in the foregoing descriptions or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense; that the structure is not limited to a cord attached label; that certain changes from the exact shapes or constructions shown, or materials described may be made Without affecting the scope and spirit of the invention as hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
What is claimed is:
1 In a label comprising a body portion, an integrally formed intermediate section having a portion cut out and foldably joined outwardly of the body portion at one side edge, an integrally formed-projecting portion joined outwardly of the intermediate section at one side edge; the
cut-out of the intermediate section disposed in alignment with an adhesive coated surface of the label upon folding the intermediate section to overlay a portion of one side surface of the body portion and upon folding the project ing portion to overlay the intermediate section, whereby a portion of the projecting portion is aligned into contact with the adhesive coating through the cut-out of the intermediate sect-ion thereby disposing the opposing side surface of the projecting. portion securely raised substantially horizontal above the intermediate section and one side surface of the body portion.
2. In a label comprising a body portion, an integrally formed intermediate section having a portion cut out and foldably joined outwardly of the body portion at one side edge, an integrally formed projecting portion joined outwardly of the intermediate section at one side edge; the intermediate section folded to overlay a portion of one side surface of the body portion and the projecting portion folded to overlay the intermediate section outwardly of the body portion, the cut-out of the intermediate section disposed in alignment with an adhesive coated surface of the label, whereby a portion of one side surface of the projecting portion is aligned into contact with the adhesive coating through the cut-out of the intermediate section and the opposing side surface of the projecting portion is thereby securely raised substantially horizontal above the intermediate section and one side surface of the body portion.
3. In a label as in claim 2 in which a portion of the rear face side surface of the projecting portion is aligned into contact with an adhesive coating of the body portion front side surface through the cut-out of the intermediate section.
4. In a label as in claim 2 in which a portion of the front side surface of the body portion is aligned into contact with an adhesive coating of the projecting portion rear side surface through the cut-out of the intermediate section.
