TOY BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,764, dated June '9, 1885. Application filed september 15, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that L'CHAs. H. WEsTcoTT, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Building-Blocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of one of my blocks as preferably constructed. Fig. 2 is a like view of a modification of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of two of the many forms in which said blocks may be cornbined; and Figs.l 5 and 6 are longitudinal sections of the blocks joined together, shown in Figs. l and 2, respectively.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention relates to devices for the amusement of children, and has for its object an increase in the number of gures which may be produced by the combination of interlocking blocks; to which end said invention consists, principally, in a toy building-block that is provided at cach end with intersecting grooves and upon each side face with a raised panel, which at its ends forms shoulders that correspond in position to the bottoms of said grooves and furnish end bearings for the engaging blocks, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, in a toy building-block which is provided at its ends with intersecting grooves and engaging-tongues, and .within each side corner has a right-angled rabbet, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
It consists, finally, in a toy building-block which is provided at each end with intersecting grooves and corresponding tongues, upon each side face has raised panels that constitute end bearings for engaging blocks, and within each side corner is provided with a right-angled rabbet, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a block that has a general square form, and within each end is provided with four right-angled grooves, a, each of which is parallel with one of the side faces and is separated therefrom by means of a tongue, a', that corresponds in thickness to the width of such groove and is adapted to fit into and be contained within any groove of another similar block.
Within each side corner of the block A is formed a right-angled rabbet, a2, the sides of which are in a line with the inner sides of the grooves a, that intersect each other at such corner, while upon each side face is formed a raised panel, a3, that at its ends a* corresponds to and is in a line with the bottoms of the adjacent grooves.
In use one of the tongues a of one block A is inserted wit-hin a groove a of another block, and is pressed inward until its top bears against the bottom of said groove and the end of said Iii-st block abuts upon the shoulder at, formed by the contiguous end of the panel ai of said second block, in which position said blocks are locked together by the friction between the sides of said tongue and groove.
Ihe corner rabbets a2 permit two blocks A to be secured within adjacent intersecting grooves a of a third block, as shown in Fig. 3, while without such provision such arrangement of blocks would be impracticable, and the forms in which they could be combined would be considerably lessened in number.
The shoulders at render the joints betweeny the blocks much firmer than would otherwise be the case, and enable said blocks to be more readily brought into line with each other; but, if desired, the panel may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 2, without lessening the number of combinations of which said blocks are capable.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim isl. A toy building-block that is provided at each end with intersecting grooves and upon each side face with a raised panel which at its ends forms shoulders thaty correspond in position to the bottoms of said grooves and furnish end bearings for the engaging blocks, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. A toy building-block which is provided at its ends with intersecting grooves and en- IOO gauging-tongues, and within each side corner has a right-angled rabbet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A toy building-block which is provided at each end with intersecting grooves and corresponding tongues, upon each side face has raised panels that constitute end bearings for engaging blocks, and Within each side corv11er is provided with a right-angled rabbet,
