Claims priority, application dweden, Nov. 27, 1961, 11,782/61 2 Claims. or. iso iss For closing the openings of holds on ships it is known to use hatches divided up into pivotally connected sections, these hatches being known as folding hatches. It is also known to provide such folding hatches with hydraulic motors for the folding operation, and with wheels adapted to run on rails disposed along the hold opening. These motors, which have been either in the form of double-acting piston motors or vane piston motors, were hitherto disposed at an edge of the hatch which was turned upwards on the folding together of the hatches. As a result, these motor units, which are relatively heavy in view of the large hatch masses to be moved, have to be lifted up during the folding together of the hatches, and this is a further increase on the work for folding the hatches and also means increased weight for the motor unit.
The present invention relates to an arrangement for such sectional hatches wherein two hatch sections are pivotally fixed to two carriages disposed to be displaceable on either side of and along a hold opening.
The arrangement according to the invention is characterised in that the said hatch sections are adapted to be operated each by its own motor disposed on the said carriages.
A'very favourable embodiment of the arrangement according to the invention is characterisedin that the motors are hydraulic and that the pumps for the pressure fluid to the motors are also disposed on the carriages, so that any leaking pressure fluid cannot penetrate into the hold and contaminate any material therein.
As a result of the arrangement according to the invention, the motors and any driving mechanism belonging thereto no longer have to be lifted up during the folding together of the hatches, and this means a considerable reduction of the work for the folding operation. This in turn results in a reduction of the number of operating stations since only every other downwardly extending hatch section has to be provided with motor operation, while in the hitherto customary arrangements each upwardly extending section had to be provided with motor operation. This gives a considerable reduction of purchase and operating costs.
The invention is explained with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
PEG. 1 is a side View of one embodiment of an arrangement according to the invention with hydraulic piston motors and with hatches folded down;
PEG. 2 shows the same with hatches. folded up;
FIG. 3 is a side view of an embodiment of an arrangement according to the invention with hydraulic vane piston motors and hatches folded down;
FIG. 4 shows the same with the hatches folded up;
P16. 5 is a diagrammatic View of an arrangement according to the invention with a four-part hatch in the folded down position;
FIG. 6 shows the same half folded up;
FIG. 7 shows the same completely folded up;
FIG. 8 is an eight-part hatch half folded up, and
FIG. 9 shows the same completely folded up.
In the first embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a carriage member 1 advantageously constructed with a crosssection in the form of an equilateral parallel trapezium is provided with wheels 2 at either end, the wheels being adapted to roll on rails or tracks 3 disposed along opposite sides of a hold opening. Two folding hatch sections 4 are pivotally connected to the member 1, for example by pivots S fitted at the ends thereof near the top of the mem her 1.
Two hydraulic piston motors 6 are pivotally connected at one end by pivots 7 disposed at one end of the member 1 near the bottom thereof while the other end of the said motors is pivotally connected by pivots 8 disposed on the hatch sections 4 near the bottom edges thereof.
The edges of the hatch sections 4 remote from the member 1 are pivotally connected by hinges 9 to their respective hatch sections 10, the opposite edges of which are provided with wheels 11 adapted to roll'on the rails 3.
As will be apparent from FIGS. 8 and 9, the hatch sections 11h may be pivotally connected to another pair of hatch sections iii, 4 on an adjoining member 1, and so on.
The second embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 differs from that described above in that the hatch sections 4 are fixed to the housings 12 of hydraulic vane piston motors, the shafts 13 of which are nonrotatably fixed in the member 1.
It will, therefore, be seen that the invention provides a folding hatch cover arrangement which comprise at least one traverser carriage extending across a hatch opening. The carriage has opposite wheel sides and a top with the wheel sides supported on the track means by suitably mounted rollers so that the carriage can effect rolling movement relative to the hatch opening. The shape of the carriage, that is, the equilateral parallel trapezium with oblique sides is such that the sides that extend along the sides of the hatch opening define oppositely directed ramps R, see FIG. 2. As clearly illustrated two first hatch cover sections 4 are pivotally connected to the carriage and two further cover sections 10 are respectively pivotally fastened to the free ends of the first cover sections 4. Rollers it are mounted at the free end-s of each of the further cover sections 16 for supporting the section on the track 3 that extends along opposite sides of the hatch opening. Further, these rollers are in alignment with the oblique sides of the carriage and thus, with the ramps so that when the first-named cover sections are pivoted into upright position, the rollers on the further hatch cover sections 10 roll along the tracks 3 and up on the ramps on the opposite sides of the carriage. Further, at least two hydraulic motors are carried by the carriage and connected to the first-named cover sections 4 so as to pivot the same relative to the carriage so as to fold all the cover sections between hatch closing and hatch opening positions, i.e.(, from the horizontal to an upright position and in which all four cover sections are supported entirely by the carriage so that the carriage and the sections supported thereby can be rolled lengthwise of the hatch opening.
Although only two different embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described hereinabove, others will come within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
l. A folding hatch cover arrangement comprising at least one traverser carriage extending across the hatch opening and having rollers at opposite sides thereof adapted to support the carriage for rolling movement along opposite sides of a hatch opening, said carriage in cross section having the shape of an equilateral parallel trapezium with the oblique sides thereof extending along the sides of the opening and defining oppositely directed ramps, two hatch cover sections pivotally fastened to said carriage, two further hatch cover sections respectively pivotally fastened to the free ends of the first-named hatch cover sections, rollers at the free ends of each of said further sections adapted to support the sections along opposite sides of the hatch opening, said rollers being in alignment with said oblique sides of the carriage and thus, the ramps, so that when the said first-named hatch cover section are pivoted int o upright position, the rollers on the further hatch cover sections roll up on the ramps defined by the oblique sides of the carriage, at least two hydraulic motors carried by said carriage and connected to the respectively first-named sections to pivot the same relative to the carriage so as to fold all the sections between hatch closing and hatch opening positions, said wheeled sides of said carriage including ramp means, a second pair of hatch cover section pivoted to said first hatch cover sections, support wheel means on the second sections for supporting the same for rolling movement on said track means and said last-mentioned supporting wheels being adapted to engage and roll up onto said ramp means when said first cover sections are folded into upright position.
2. In a hatch cover construction for use on a hatch having a track means along each side of the hatch opening, a rolling, folding cover arrangement comprising a wheeled carriage having opposite wheeled sides and a top adapted to extend across the hatch opening to be supported on said track means, at least two first hatch cover sections, mean pivotally connecting one end of each of said first sections to said carriage for swinging movement about an axis transverse of the hatch opening, hydraulic motor actuator means connected between the carriage and the respective first sections for folding the same into upright position whereby said carriage and first sections can be rolled relative to the opening to expose the same, said wheeled sides of said carriage including ramp means and a second pair of hatch cover sections pivoted to said first hatch cover sections and support wheel means on the edges of said second sections to support said second sections on said track means, said wheel means being adapted to engag-e and roll up on said ramp means when said first sections are folded upwardly.
