Description
July 27, 1965 P- H. POWELL SHOE HEEL REINFORCING DOWEL AND TOP LIFT Filed May 12, 1964 FIG.
FIG. 2.
United States Patent 3,196,560 SHOE HEEL REINFORCING DOWEL AND TOP LIFT Peter Harry Powell, Hessle, England, assignor to Hollis Heels Limited, Yorkshire, England, a British company Filed May 12, 1964, Ser. No. 366,768 Claims priority, application Great Britain, Aug. 19, 1963, 32,788/63 Claims. (Cl. 3634) The present invention relates to a combined reinforcing dowel and metal top lift for narrow high heels of ladies shoes, and more particularly to a device of this character comprising a pin member and a lift member, the pin member passing completely through the lift member and being secured to the lift member by deformations formed in the upper surface of the lift member.
Such reinforcing dowels have axially extending flutes, ridges, serrations or ribs which during the forcing of the dowel into the preformed recess bite into the material of the heel to prevent the dowel and top lift thereon from rotating relative to the heel and provide for a good grip in the recess.
The tip lift must be firmly secured to the dowel so that it will not turn relative thereto or become loose and possibly fall off, and the object of the present invention is to provide a re-inforcing dowel pin member with a metal top lift member firmly secured thereto, and which may be inexpensively manufactured.
To this end, according to the present invention, the heel re-inforcing dowel comprises a metal pin member with a circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending series of ridges formed on its lateral surface and extending from its fiat lower end along at least part of its length and a metal top lift member placed as a close fit on the flat lower end and locked thereto by deformation of the metal of the tip lift which bites into complementary deformations in the ridges of the pin member.
The metal of the tip lift may be deformed by pressure, spinning or blows and the lift member is preferably deformed on the upper side of the tip lift from which the pin member extends upwardly.
The lower end of the dowel extends completely through the top lift member terminating substantially flush with the lower face of the top lift and in use the striking of the top lift on the ground tends to deform the interface contact at the lower end of the pin member and thus addi tionally lock the top lift to the dowel stem.
The invention is by way of example illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevation of the combined reinforcing dowel and top lift,
FIG. 2 is a section on the line II-II of FIG. 1,
FIG. 3 is a vertical section, and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing alternative deformation of the metal of the tip lift.
The re-inforcing dowel comprises an elongated metallic pin member 1 with a circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending series of ridges 2 formed on the lateral surface thereof and which extend from the flat lower end upwardly over at least part, and preferably the greater part, of the length of the pin member 1 towards its upper end which is conveniently tapered as at 3 to facilitate its entry into the usual preformed recess in a heel (not shown).
The top lift member 4 is also metallic and conveniently circular with a central axial bore which receives the lower end of the pin member as a close fit and is then locked to the pin member 1 by simultaneous deformation of the metal of pin member and lift member by pressure, spinning or blows. Thus, an annular groove 5 may be formed in the upper surface of the top lift member 4 so that the metal at the inner side of groove 5 is forced into the metal of ridges or at least into spaces between the ridges 2, substantially as indicated in FIG. 3. This deformation is preferably formed in the surface of the top lift member 4 from which the dowel extends, as illustrated in the drawings.
In a modification illustrated in FIG. 4 the metal of the top lift is deformed by a tool which forms a plurality of depressions 6 which likewise force part of the metal of the top lift into the metal of the ridges 2 or at least into the recesses between the ridges 2 to lock the top lift firmly to the pin member 1.
The deformation of the metal of the top lift and its forcing into the metal of the pin or spaces between the ridges 2 not only locks the top lift member 4 to the pin member 1 but also effectively prevents it rotating relative thereto.
While I have shown and described what I believe to be the best embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
