Description

(No ModeL) L. G. WOOLLEY..
DYNAMO ELEGTRIG MACHINE.
No. 319,540. Patented June 9, 1885 WITNESSES. IJV' V'EJV TOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONIDAS G. WOOLLEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, IND., ASSIGNOR TO THE \VOOL- LEY LOCOMOTIVE ELECTRIC HEADLIGHT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,540, dated June 9, 1835.
Application filed April 15, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONIDAS G. WooLLEY, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamo- Electrie Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention consists in the combination and arrangement of a dynamo-electric machine, a rotary engine by which it is driven, and a bedplate upon which both are mounted, whereby a single or continuous shaft may be used for both the engine and the armature of the dynamo, and great steadiness of motion and freedom from friction in running are secured, with the attendant desirable results, as will be hereinafter more particularly described. By this arrangement the apparatus may also be made to occupy a comparatively small space, as will be understood by an examination of the drawlngs.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a dynamo electric machine and its engine constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, some parts of the engine which are behind the coil of the dynamo being shown by dotted lines.
' In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the base upon which the dynamo and engine are mounted; B, the limbs of the magnet; C, the pole-pieces thereof; D, the armature, and E the engine.
The several parts are of themselves not peculiar, further than being adapted to the arrangement specified, and therefore need no extended description. The engine is connected directly to the shaft (1 of the armature, and its cylinder is located between the limbs or coils B, as shown, and all the parts are secured to the same base, A, as before stated.
As will be readily understood, this arrangement adapts the machine for use in many places heretofore impractical or diflicult, notably, to be mounted on a locomotive in connection with an electric head-light, that being the particular use for which I have designed it, and one in which all the advantages hereinbefore enumerated are present in a marked degree-via, the rigidity and steadiness of the parts in relation to each other, and the smallness of the space occupied.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the dynamoelectric machine, the rotary engine for driving the same, a common shaft for the engine and the armature of the dynamo, and a common bed upon which said engine and said dynamo are both mounted, said engine being located be tween the limbs or coils of said dynamo, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the dynamo-electric machine, the engine for driving the same, and a common bed upon which both are mounted,
said engine being located between the limbs I or coils of said dynamo, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 24th day of March, A. D. 1884..
