THOMAS B. ROSS, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
SASH -FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,324, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed December 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. Ross, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in window-fasteners, and has for its object to lock the sash in any position in which it may be placed, and thus prevent the sash from being either raised or lowered; and it consists, essentially, in combining a gravitating locking-pawl and an operating bell-crank lever with a gear-wheel mounted in a box located in the window-casing, and adapted to engage a rack-bar attached to the adjacent edge of the window-sash.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowframe and sash provided with this attachment. Fig. 2 is a view of the sash removed from the frame, and shows some of the parts of the fastener in detail. Fig. 3 is an edge view of a portion of the window-frame with a part broken away, and shows the construction of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of the device for unlocking the fastener.
The letter A indicates the window-frame.
B is the sash. E is a rack bar secured thereto, and K a spring on the opposite side thereof.
G is a metal plate secured to the windowframe, and has lugs 0, to which is pivoted the horizontal arm of the bell-crank lever D, to the portion D of which is attached a button, a, the outer surface of which protrudes slightly through the plate 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The end of the armD may be reduced, so as to enter openings 9 in the plate or rod of the gravitating locking-pawl G, which is provided with a head, G, and a lockingstud, g, which, when the fastener is to be looked, enters between two of the teeth of the spur-wheel H through a suitable opening in the top of the box F. The plate or rod passes through a suitable guide or guides attached to the box F, and the specific gravity of the pawl causes 0 its head G to rest upon the top of the box F, and when in this position the fasteneris looked, as the wheel H is thereby prevented from turning on its axis; but if pressure is applied to the button a the inner end of the arm D is raised, together with rod G, its head G, and locking device g, and by this means the spurwheel H is released and is permitted to revolve freely when engaged by the teeth of the rateh-bar E as the sash B is either raised or lowered.
K is a spring attached to one side of the sash, and is intended to force the sash and the teeth of the rack-bar against and into the teeth of spur-wheel H, and thereby provide against the swelling or shrinkage of the wood-work.
This sash-fastener is to be used either on car or house windows.
I desire to observe that I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a window-sash with a rack-bar on one side and to locate within the window-casing a box carrying a gear-wheel and a locking-pawl, the gear-wheel being adapted to intergear with the rack and the pawl with the gear, for the purpose of 7 3 holding the sash at varying heights, and that I do not, therefore, broadly lay claim to such.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is
1. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with the window-frame provided on one side with a pressure-spring and on the other side with a rack-bar, of a box located within the window-casing, and carrying a gear-wheel which meshes with said rack, the gravitating sliding 8 5 locking-pawl having a weighted head and a projecting stud, and the pivoted bell-crank lever connected at one end with said gravi tating pawl, and provided at the other with a button which slightly protrudes beyond the surface of the casing.
2. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with the box and the gear-wheel mounted therein, of the sliding gravitating locking-pawl provided with a weighted head and a projecting stud, which engages normally with the teeth of said gearand with a series of apertures, and the pivoted bell-crank lever engaging at one endwith said apertures and provided at In testimony whereof I affixmysignature in :o
the other with a button. presence of two witnesses.
3. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with the sliding gravitating locking-pawl having a THOMAS B. ROSS;
5 series of apertures in one of its members, a
weighted head, and a projecting stud, of the Witnesses: bell-crank lever, one end of which is adapted GEO. L. TORIAN, to engage said apertures, and the other of MosEs N. Ross. which is provided with a button.
