Description
lUiniTnn STaTes PATIENT @erica NEVTON I. VOLFE, OF CANAL VINCHESTER, OHIO.
llilACl-HN. FOR PRESSING ldOMED BRlCKS.
SPECFCATION forming part of Letters Paten-t No. 318,93s, dated May 26, 18535.
Application filed March '2, 1885.
To f/,ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON I. Worms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canal \Vinchester, in the county of Franlc lin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing Holded Bricks; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this spccilication, and in whicl1 Figure l is a perspective view of my im proved machine for pressing molded brick, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to machines for pressing molded bricks; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts ofthe same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the leiter A indicates the frame of the machine, which in this case is shown mounted upon wheels B for easy transportation, and two vertical plates, C C, are secured in this frame, forming the sides of the mold. Two plates, D D, are piv- -oted at their lower ends between the lower corners of the plates C, and have springs E secured to their outer sides and to the frame, which springs draw the plates outward, while bolts F, securing the vertical side plates, C, together, prevent the springs from drawing the pivoted end plates too far out.
G is a lever, which is pivoted at one end between lugs or bearings H at one end of the frame, and a spring, l, serves to raise the lever bearing against its under side. rJ'wo diverging curved studs or bars, J J, project from the under side of the lever, and are adapted to engage and bear against the outer sides of the pivoted end plates when the lever is depressed, and a plate, K, is secured between these studs, forming the upper platen of the press, being of such a width so as to fit exactly between the vertical side plates. An
. arm, L, or dat bar is secured to the lever,
(No modehl having a vertical slot, M, at its upper end, through which passes a set-screw, N, passing into the side of the lever` and this iiat bar slides i'n a vertical bearing, t), at the side of one of the vertical side plates, and has its lower end bent upward and pivoted between two lips, P l?, upon the under side of the lower platen, Q, of the press.
Then the press is to be-used. the molded and partly-dried brick is placed edgewise into the press, resting upon the lower platen, and when the lever is depressed the curved studs upon the lever will draw the pivoted end plates together, pressing the brick endwise, while the vertical side plates and the upper and lower platen will confine the edges ofthe brick.
By adjusting the flat bar L the press may be adjusted to bricks of different width, and the lower platen being pivoted upon the upwardly-bent end of the slotted iiat bar L the said platen will always be perfectly horizontal when the lever is depressed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a machine for pressing molded brick, the combination of two rigid side plates, two end plates pivoted at their ends between the corners of the side plates, and an upper and lower platen secured rigidly at a distance from each other, sliding between the side plates, and diverging studs engaging the free ends of the end plates when forced against them, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a machine for pressing molded brick, the combination of a frame having two vertical side plates secured in it, two end plates pivoted between the lower corners of the side plates, and having cross-bolts preventing them from tilting out too far, springs secured to the end plates and to the frame, drawing the end plates outward, a lever pivoted at one end to the frame and having a spring bearing against its under side, diverging studs projecting from the under side of the lever above the ends of the pivoted end pieces, a top platen secured to the under side of the lever between the diverging studs, a slotted arm secured by a set-screw to one side of the lever and sliding in a vertical bearing upon IOC) the outer side of one of the side plates, and my own I have hereunto affixed my signature having an upwardly-bent lower end, and a in presence of two witnesses. lower platen pivoted at its under side upon T .T the end of the upwardlyfbent lower end of BEXVTO I' XVOLFE' 5 lthe lat slotted bar, as and for the purpose Vitnesses:
shown and set forth. GEO. M. B. DORE,
In testimony that I claim tho foregoing as WILLIAM SoHRoCK.
