NITED STATES PATENT since,
CHARLES M. HUNTINGTON, OF EAST RANDGLPH, NEW YORK.
FRICTION-CLUTCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,905, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed March 31, 1885.
'full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this'specification, in
- which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved frictionclutch. Fig. 2 is an edge view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the trio t-ion-ring, and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the clutch-arm.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective friction-clutch for arresting or retarding the movement of machinery, to be applied to any use requiring a clutch of this description.
My invention consists in a grooved wheel attached to the shaft whose motion is to be controlled, and in the combination therewith of a split ring received by the groove and provided with wedge-shaped ears projecting therefrom near opposite sides of the slot of the ring, an apertured arm adapted to receive the wedge-shaped ears, and a lever turning on the shaft and pivoted to the arm, all as here inafter more fully described.
The wheel A, secured to the shaft B, has a peripheral groove, (1, to which is fitted a slot ted ring, 0, provided with wedge-shaped ears I) at opposite sides of the slot 0. The ring 0 is larger in internal diameter than the wheel A at the bottom of the groove a, so that when the said ring is allowed to spring apart so as (No model.)
to assume its normal shape it will fit loosely on the wheel A. Upon the shaft B is placed a lever, D, to which is pivoted one end of the arm E, the opposite end of the arm being bent at right angles over the edge of the wheel A, the bent portion having an aperture to receive the wedge-shaped ears b, projecting from the slotted ring C.
W'hen the arm E is raised, so as to embrace the outer and narrower parts of the ears b, the ring 0 is allowed to expand, and the wheel A may revolve freely therein. By moving the lever D so as to bring the apertured end of the arm E into engagement with the inclined sides of the wedge-shaped ears I), the ring 0 is contracted more or less and made to exert more or less pressure upon the periphery of the wheel A.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a friction-clutch, of a friction-wheel, a slotted ring, provided with wedge-shaped ears at opposite sides of the slot, and an apertured arm adapted to engage the wedge-shaped ears of the slotted ring, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, in a friction-clutch, of the wheel A, the slotted ring 0, provided with wedge-shaped ears I), the apertured arm E, embracing the said wedge-shaped ears, and the lever D, pivoted to the arm E and turning on the shaft B, as herein described.
