V. W. BUTTS. V
THILL COUPLING.
N0.818,867. Patented May 26, 1885.
IiNTTEn STATES PATENT @EEEQE.
V. 'WINSLOIV BUTTS, OF HAMDEN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS WV. FERENSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,867, dated May 26,1885.
Application tiled J anuary .22, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, V. WINsLow Burrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hamden, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, ciear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in thin-couplings, the object of the device being to provide a cheap and effective means for holding a headless bolt in position between the side arms of the thill iron, said device being also provided with a means for preventing the rattling of the parts upon each other, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is aperspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
A. represents the front axle of a vehicle, to which is attached the clip B, which is of ordinary construction, and is provided with the forwardly-projeeting side pieces I) b and screwthreaded ends I). The side wings are provided with the usual perforations for the reception of the securingbolt B. To the under side of the clip is secured, by means of nuts which pass over the screw-threaded portions 1), a spring-plate, C, which is constructed as shown, said spring plate or holder being provided at one end with astraight portion, 0, of increased thickness, from which extends a spring curved portion, 0, which is bent upwardly and ex tends outwardly beyond the thill-iron, so as to form a straight portion, D. The tendency of the main portion 0' is to throw the end D upwardly, while the portion 0 and the rear curved portion, 0', will throw the end downwardly.
To the upper edge of the portion D of the spring 0 is attached, by means of a bolt, 61, which passes through a perforation therein, a plate, E, said plate being provided with upwardly-projecting side pieces 6 e, an upwardly-curved portion,f, and a straight body portion, 9, which is provided with one or more openings, through which the bolt d will pass for securing the parts to each other. 5 5
In connection with my improvement a straight headless bolt, clips, and thill-irons of ordinary construct-ion are employed, and for different sizes of clips the plate E may be readily removed and one of greater width sub- 63 stituted, this being the only change necessary to adapt my invention to clips of differentsizes as now supplied to the trade.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown the plate provided with a slot instead of perfora- 6 5 tions, as shown in the other figures, and either means may be employed for adjusting the plate upon the spring.
The parts when placed in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will not only prevent dis- 7:; placement of the bolt, but will also prevent the thill-iron rattling, as there will be a constant pressure upon the end of the thill-iron, the curved portion f abutting against the same.
vVhen it is desired to remove the coupling- 7 5 bolt, the end D is depressed, and the parts will slide beyond the side pieces of the clip, and thus allow the easy removal of the bolt.
I clairn The combination, with the clip, thill-iron, and bolt, of a curved springbar attached at the lower portion of the clip, and provided near its opposite end with a plate and an independent plate secured thereto, and having curved side wings and an upturned portion which bears against the curved end of the thilliron, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
V. VVINSLOW BUTTS.
