Description

June 8, 1965 A. KINGSLEY HINGED MULTIPLE LINE TYPE HOLDER Filed Nov. 1, 1963 INVENTOR 'W/S ,4. A//V66ZV ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,187,665 HINGED MULTIPLE LINE TYPE HOLDER Lewis A. Kingsley, 850 Cahuenga Blvd, Hollywood 38, Calif. Filed Nov. 1, I963, Ser. No. 320,308 1 Claim. (Cl. MIL-28) This invention relates to a hinged multiple line type holder.
An object of this invention is to provide a type holder wherein individual type may be inserted in an open face side and maintained and aligned therein in a novel manner.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a type holder wherein individual type may be removed and replaced without disrupting the remaining type.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a type holder wherein the setting up of type is greatly accelerated.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a type holder wherein the allowed clearance for type fit may be greatly reduced and hence far greater precision of alignment of the individual as well as multiple rows of type may be attained.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of a type holder embodying this invention.
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation of the type holder.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective of the type holder in the open or type receiving position.
FIGURE 4 is a similar perspective of the type holder in the closed position.
FIGURE 5 is a view taken along line 5-5 of FIG- URE 2.
FIGURE 6 is a view taken along line 6-6 of FIG- URE 2.
FIGURE 7 is an enlarged view of an individual type.
While the type holder hereinafter described is particularly adaptable to use in hot roll leaf stamping machines of the type described in my prior patents such as for example No. 2,047,373, 2,960,024, 2,996,000, and 3,008,- 866, it is readily adapted to other stamping operations as for example the branding of milk cartons and similar marking operations.
In the embodiment illustrated, the type holder has two type receiving members 10 and 12. Each member has a type retainer 14 and 16 having an L-shaped cross section forming a floor and a rear wall for the open face type receiving space. End blocks 18 and 20- are provided on type receiving member 10 and similar blocks 22 and 24- are provided upon type receiving member 12. forming end walls for the type receiving space. Blocks 18 and 22 are secured by screws 24 and 26 respectively while blocks 20 and 24 are secured by rivets 28 and 30 respectively. The extremities of block 20 is bifurcated to receive flange 34 on block 24 and pin '36 which pass through the bifurcated extremity 32 and flange 34 pivotally interconnecting members 10 and 12.
Ice
i4 projecting into the type receiving space formed in member 10 and extends longitudinally the length of said space and is positioned above the floor forming portion of type retainer 14. Similarly a ridge 40 is provided in the type receiving space of member 12.
A set screw 42 projects through a threaded aperture in block 18 into the type receiving space and carries a movable plate 44 which in turn is grooved to receive ridge 38. Similarly set screw 46 carries movable plate 48.
Each individual type 49 is provided with a groove 50 which receives ridge 33 or 40 upon insertion into place.
which automatically aligns the type with great precision and further permits replacement of individual type without disturbing the remainder.
To insure proper alignmentof successive rows of type block 18 carries an alignment pin 52 which fits through a suitable bore 54 in the rear wall portion of member 12 and into a suitable recess 56 in block 22.
While only two lines of type have been illustrated, it is readily apparent that additional lines may be added as desired.
While what hereinbefore has been described is the preferred embodiment of this invention it is readily apparent that alterations and modifications can be resorted to without departing from the scope of this invention and such alterations and modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a type holding means the combination of a pair of type holding devices, each having a floor, a rear wall and opposed end walls forming a type receiving space open at the top and front, a longitudinal ridge extending along the rear wall, individual type each having a groove formed therein to receive a portion of said ridge, said ridge being spaced above the floor of said type receiving space, said type each having an end face abutting said floor when its groove embraces said ridge, and means for clamping said type against one of said end walls; corresponding end walls at one end of each device, hinged together about an axis substantially parallel to said rear walls whereby said devices may be pivoted toward and from a position wherein the rear wall of one covers the open front of the other to thus cooperate with the clamping means, the floor, and ridge and groove means to securely position the individual type in said other type holder, and interengaging pin and socket means at the other ends of i said devices.
A ridge 38 is formed on the rear wall of type retainer References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 83,912 11/68 Bradford 101-112 1,179,070 4/16 Buchert 61 a1 101 112 1,661,808 3/28 Messmer 101- 30 X 1,763,090 6/30 Buzza 101-391X 1,817,142 8/31 Hehn 101-381 1,978,901 10/34 Hoffman 101-90 x 2,333,716 11/43 Hamnett 101--2s 2,925,773 2/60 Kingsley 1o1 27 X WILLIAM PENN, Primary Examiner.
