Filed May 7, 1962, Ser. No. 192,790 12 Claims. (Cl. 240-78) The present invention relates to a lighting fixture, and it particularly relates to an incandescent type lighting fixture as provided with a recessed mounting inside a ceiling.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a rewssed low brightness down directed lighting fixture which will give desirable illumination over a table or other area within a room and which at the same time may be readily mounted inside of a ceiling without marring the ceilings appearance.
Another object is to provide a novel ceiling lighting arrangement which will give a uniform low brightness without glare at a level of reading within a room without glare and without defacement of the ceiling structure.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory according to one embodiment of the present invention to provide a lighting fixture having an upwardly extending removable upwardly convergent baflle which extends into an elevated dome construction in which is positioned an incandescent light.
The device may be readily clipped or otherwise fastened to the ceiling well below the position of the light with the entire dome being suitably supported by brackets with the ceiling construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherei is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, there is shown an acoustical ceiling plaque A having an opening 3 through which projects the removable circular baflie C.
The bathe C extends upwardly into the downwardly divergent conical reflector seat D which at its upper end extends into the lower periphery of the compound curve reflector E.
The compound curve reflector E carries the outlet box F having the electrical connections thereto at G.
The brackets H form the supporting structure, and
they may be connected both to the ceiling as well as in- 1 teriorly to the various parts of the enclosure structure.
Referring particularly to FIG. 1, the acoustical panels or ceiling A has the right angular frame 163 around the upper periphery thereof which may be connected by means of the encircling ring or angular plate 121:0 the horizontal base legs 13 which are clamped down by the wing nuts.
Mounted on the ring 12 are a series of right angular members 15 which have inturned fingers 16 which bear against the exterior side 17 of the removable baflle C.
The removable bathe member C may have an interior facing 18 of black finish.
It will be noted that this removable bafiie C is convergent upwardly and it has its smallest dimension at its upper end 19 and it has a bottom outstanding peripheral flange 26 which extends under the acoustic ceiling or panel A around the opening B.
The frame members H have the vertical side legs 21 which extend upwardly from the horizontal base legs 13.
The reflector seat is carried by the acute brackets 22.
The inside downwardly inclined legs 23 have screws or rivet connections 24 to the central downwardly convergent conical portion 25 of the reflector seat D.
The reflector seat D has a downwardly projecting sleeve 26 which encircles the removable baflie C, and it also has an upper telescoping inside of the lower depending sleeve 28 of the upper aluminum reflector E.
The sleeve 27 will abut the shoulder 29 at the lower edge of the dome 30.
The dome 34 will carry at its upper flatted portion 31 llhQbOlliOlTl 32 of the junction box F having the interior porcelain receptacle 33 and a removable lid 34 held in position by the screws 35.
Referring to the legs 21 of the brackets H, they are connected by means of the screws 36 and nuts 37'to the inside plate members 38 which are welded or otherwise permanently connected at 39 to. the vertical members 40 of the acute angle brackets 22.
If desired, a thumb screw or stud screw as indicated at 41. may be utilized to hold the plate 33, the leg 21 and the leg 40 together to prevent any swinging movement or to lock the elements together in a predetermined position.
If desired, the pivotal connections 3637-38may be made directly to the telescoping elements 27 and 28 at the junction at the lower end of the aluminum reflector and at the upper end of the reflector E and the flector seat D.
The legs 21 also carry the base members 55 of the channel members 56 (see FIG. 2) which may be held in position on the legs 21 by the screws or studs 57 and receive the horizontal U-shaped ceiling support members 58 extending through the openings 60 therein.
The plate members 61 may extend between the channel support elements 58 to lock them from center to center.
The reflector E together with the reflector seat D are normally installed in the ceiling prior to the installation of the acoustic tile, and the reflector brackets or support structure H may be attached to the mounting frame 58.
The mounting frames will carry the reflector brackets H, and these reflector brackets may then carry the mounting plate which is turn will carry the mounting frames 10 around the upper edges of the acoustical tile elements A.

In the alternative attachment construction as shown in FIG. 3, the removable bafiie '75 has the inturned flange 76' extending up to the acoustical panel '77 and has the right angular mounting frame 78. V
The mounting plate 7% may be riveted at as to the plate 81 which has a vertical leg 82 with the outstanding spring finger 83.
The rivet 8%) may hold together the horizontal flange 84 of the mounting frame '78, the mounting plate 7? and the horizontal portion of the spring 81 of the ring angle spring finger bracket 82.
In the alternative form shown in FIG. 4, the dome reflector- 9t) and reflector seat 91 have the upwardly and downwardly cylinder portions $2 and 93 respectively and may be held together by the screws and the rivets94.
In the form shown in FIG. 5, the-removable bathe 160 has the upturned lip portion 191 which will abut and be stopped against the mounting plate 102 which is connected to the horizontal portion N3 of the reflector bracket by the wing nut 164 carried by the screw 165.
The angle mounting frame 1% will extend around the plaster ceiling unit 1437 having the serrated upper. face 108.
In the form shown in FIG. 6,. the acoustic ceiling 129 has the mounting frame 12 which carriesthe stop element 122 and has a horizontal flange portion 123 riveted at 124 to the horizontal flange 125 extending outwardly from the S-spring 126 which has a leg 127 fitting tightly against the outwise wall 128 of the removable batfle.
In the connection shown in FIG. 7, the removable baffle 140 will have an upturned lip 141 which will contact the bafile stop 14-2 which is mounted 'on the mounting frame 143 extending around the side thereof and over the top of the plaster 144.
The horizontal base leg of the reflector bracket 145 has a wing nut connection 146 to the screw 147 which extends down through the leg 145 as well as the horizontalportion 146 of the mounting frame.
It is thus apparent that the applicants have provided a novel recessed low brightness reflector device readily positioned inside of the ceiling and mounted most conveniently either on theplaster ceiling. or an acoustical ceiling.
As many changes could be made in the above lighting fixture, and many widely different embodiments of this invention could be made withoutdeparting from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:
1. A recessed low brightness incandescent light reflector fixture for mounting interiorly of a plaster and acoustical ceiling, said ceiling having an opening and an interior mounting structure, said fixture having a top half spherical aluminum inverted dome like reflector member, a junction inlet box carried by said top dome like reflector at the top thereof, an incandescent lamp projecting downwardly therewithin terminating at the lower edge of the reflector, a lower downwardly converging cone connected to the lower periphery of the reflector, said cone having a lower opening with a downwardly extending peripheral flange larger than the diameter of the lamp, a removable hollow elongated curved side black interior finish bafile extending through the ceiling opening into thelower part of the cone and mounting brackets carrying said reflector from said mounting structure, the lower edges of said spherical dome and the upper edge of said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions and the lower edge of said cylindrical baifle having any upturned lower edge closely fitting into the ceiling opening and said removable baffle having a diameter larger than the diameter of the incandescent lamp and pivot mount being above the lower edge of the dome reflector and the pivotal connection being mounted onto the conical member adjacent its widest portion.
2. A recessed low brightness incandescent light reflector fixture for mounting interiorly of a plaster and acoustical ceiling, said ceiling having an opening and an interior mounting structure, said fixture having a top half spherical aluminum inverted dome like reflector member, a junction inlet box carried by said top dome like reflector at the top thereof, an incandescent lamp projecting downwardly therewithin terminating at the lower edge of the reflector, a lower downwardly converging cone connected to the lowerperiphery of the reflector, said cone having a lower opening with a downwardly extending, peripheral flange larger than the diameter or" the lamp, a removable hollow elongated curved side black. interior finish bafile extending through the ceiling opening into the lower part of the cone and mounting brackets carrying said reflector from said mounting structure, said mounting bracket consisting of opposite parallel side L-shaped members connected at their lower ends to the ceiling and at their upper ends having pivotal connections to the reflector, the lower edges of said spherical dome and the upper edge of said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions and the lower edge of said cylindrical bafiie having an upturned lower edge closely fitting into the ceiling opening and said removable baifle having a diameter larger than the diameter of the incandescent lamp and pivot mount being above the lower edge of the dome reflector and the pivotal connection being mounted onto the conical member adjacent its widest portion. 7

A recessed low brightness incandescent light reflector fixture for mounting interiorly of a plaster and acoustical ceiling, said ceiling having an opening and an interior mounting structure, said fixture having a top half spherical aluminum inverted dome like reflector member, a junction inlet. box carried by said top dome like reflector at the top thereof, an incandescent lamp projecting downwardly therewithin terminating at the lower edge of the reflector, a lower downwardly converging cone connected to the lower periphery of the reflector, said cone having a lower opening with a downwardly extending peripheral flange larger than the diameter of the lamp, a removable hollow elongated curved side black interior finish baflle extending through the ceiling opening into the lower. part of the cone and mounting brackets carrying said reflector from said mounting structure,.said reflector and said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions adjacent the lower portion of the incandescent lamp, the lower edges of said spherical dome and the upper edge of said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions and the lower edge of said cylindrical baflle having an upturned lower edge closely fitting into the ceiling opening and said removable bafile having a diameter larger than the diameter of the incandescent lamp and pivot mount being above the lower edge of the dome reflector and the pivotal connection being mounted onto the conical member adjacent its widest portion.

A recessed low brightness incandescent light reflector fixture for mounting interiorly of a plaster and acoustical ceiling, said ceiling having an opening and an interior mounting structure, said fixture having a top half spherical aluminum inverted dome like reflector member, a junction inlet box carried by said top dome like reflector at the top thereof, an incandescent, lamp projecting downwardly therewithin terminating at the lower edge of the reflector, a lower downwardly converging cone connected to the lower periphery of the reflector, said cone having a lower opening with a downwardly extending peripheral fiange larger than the diameter of the lamp, a removable hollow elongated curved side black interior finish baffle extending through the ceiling opening into the lower part of the cone and mounting brackets carrying said reflector from said mounting structure, and spring finger members mounted upon said brackets resiliently holding said baflle in position, the lower edges of said spherical dome and the upper edge of said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions and the lower edge of said cylindrical baflie having an upturned lower edge closely fitting into the ceiling opening and said removable bafile having a diameter larger than the diameter of the incandescent lamp and pivot mount being above the lower edge of the dome reflector and the pivotal connection being mounted onto the conical member adjacent its widest portion.

A recessed low brightness incandescent light reflector fixture for mounting interiorly of a plaster and acoustical ceiling, said ceiling having an opening and an interior mounting structure, said fixture having a top half spherical aluminum inverted dome like reflector member, a junction inlet box carried by said top dome like reflector at the top thereof, an incandescent lamp projecting downwardly therewithin terminating at the lower edge of the reflector, a lower downwardly converging cone connected to the lower periphery of the reflector, said cone having a lower opening with a downwardly extending peripheral flange larger than the diameter of the lamp, a removable hollow elongated curved side black interior finish baflie extending through the ceiling opening into the lower part of the cone and mounting brackets carrying said reflector from said mounting structure, said convergent cone having a downwardly depending sleeve at the lower portion thereof and said balfie having an upwardly projecting convergent curved end projecting through said sleeve into said cone, the lower edges of said spherical dome and the upper edge of said cone having telescoping cylindrical portions and the lower edge of said cylindrical bafiie having an upturned lower edge closely fitting into the ceiling opening and said removable baffle having a diameter larger than the diameter of the incandescent lamp and pivot mount being above the lower edge of the dome reflector and the pivotal connection being mounted onto the conical member adjacent its widest portion.

An incandescent lighting fixture recessed into a ceiling having a top inverted downwardly dished reflector semi-spherical dome having a cylindrical lower edge portion, a junction box on the top thereof, an incandescent bulb inside said junction box extending downwardly to the cylindrical lower edge portion of the dome, a middle downwardly converging frusto-conical portion having upper and lower cylindrical portions, the upper cylindrical portion of the frusto-conical portion telescoping with the lower edge portion of the dome and a lower hollow elongated member projecting at its upper end into said lower cylindrical portion and at its lower end terminating at the ceiling and a pivotal support structure mounted on said ceiling and connected to said conical portion adjacent the telescoping edge thereof.
7. The fixture of claim 6, the lower portion of the hollow elongated member being flanged outwardly to extend below the ceiling and said cylinder having curved sides convergent slightly upwardly until the upper end thereof fits within the conical portion.
8. The fixture of claim 6, said support structure having mounting means above the ceiling and having pivotal connections above and below the telescoping portions.
9. An incandescent lamp lighting fixture recessed inside of a ceiling having a circular opening larger than the size of the lamp, having a top inverted spherical-like dome, an intermediate downwardly convergent cone and a lower hollow elongated member each fitting into one another at their adjacent edges, an incandescent lamp extending vertically downwardly in the dome and to the lower edge thereof and pivotal mounting brackets mounted on the ceiling and connected to the fixture adjacent the junction of the dome and the cone.
10. The fixture of claim 9, said brackets being parallel to each other and having connections to the upper portion of the cone.
11. The fixture of claim 9, said brackets having connection members mounted on the upper portion of the convergent cone.
12. The fixture of claim 9, said hollow elongated member having curved sides which gradually converge toward each other and at their upper end project within the lower end of the convergent cone.

A RECESSED LOW BRIGHTNESS INCANDESCENT LIGHT REFLECTOR FIXTURE FOR MOUNTING INTERIORLY OF A PLASTER AND ACOUSTICAL CEILING, SAID CEILING HAVING AN OPENING AND AN INTERIOR MOUNTING STRUCTURE, SAID FIXTURE HAVING A TOP HALF SPHERICAL ALUMINUM INVERTED DOME LIKE REFLECTOR MEMBER, A JUNCTION INLET BOX CARRIED BY SAID TOP DOME LIKE REFLECTOR AT THE TOP THEREOF, AND INCANDESCENT LAMP PROJECTING DOWNWARDLY THEREWITHIN TERMINATING AT THE LOWER EDGE OF THE REFLECTOR, A LOWER DOWNWARDLY CONVERGING CONE CONNECTED TO THE LOWER PERIPHERY OF THE REFLECTOR, SAID CONE HAVING A LOWER OPENING WITH A DOWNWARDLY EXTENDING PERIPHERAL FLANGE LARGER THAN THE DIAMETER OF THE LAMP, A REMOVABLE HOLLOW ELONGATED CURVED SIDE BLACK INTERIOR FINISH BAFFLE EXTENDING THROUGH THE CEILING OPENING INTO THE LOWER PART OF THE CONE AND MOUNTING BRACKETS CARRYING SAID REFLECTOR FROM SAID MOUNTING STRUCTURE, SAID CONVERGENT CONE HAVING A DOWNWARDLY DEPENDING SLEEVE AT THE LOWER PORTION THEREOF AND SAID BAFFLE HAVING AN UPWARDLY PROJECTING CON-
