thvrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MARY FRANCE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE FIRE-BOX.
PECEFECATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,716, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed February 6, 1884.
To all whom, it 77MZZ/ concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY FRANCE, of Cleve land, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Fire-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved device for confining the fuel within a limited space in a fire boX or grate; and it consists, essentially, of, a flat or horizontal portion or plate adapted to cover a portion of the grate, and vertical walls at the opposite ends of the flat portion adapted to form abutments, against which the coal rests.
My invention further consists in certain details in construction, as will be more fully de scribed, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a stove with my device therein. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the device, and Fig. 3 is a view 25 in side elevation of a slightly-modified construction.
A represents a plate, of any suitable size, preferably provided at opposite ends with upwardly-extending flanges a, to which the vertical plates or walls B are rigidly secured. These walls can be secured to the inner faces of the flanges a, as shown in Fig. 2, or they can be secured to the outer faces of the flanges, as shown in Fig. 3, or they can be cast integral with said flanges and answer the same purpose. I prefer, however, to form the vertical (N0 model.)
walls independently of the plate A, as they are exposed to the greatest heat, and are liable to wear more rapidly than the other parts, and can be replaced at a trifling cost. This device can be placed within the fire-box at either end, and covers a portion of the grate-surface, leaving the remaining portion of the grate exposed. The coals are deposited on the exposed portion of the grate, and are retained within a small compass by one of the vertical walls of the device.
By providing the device with two vertical Walls it can be used at either end of the firebox, and can be removed, so as to expose the entire grate-surface when necessary.
\V hat I claim is- 1. An adjustable device for confining the fuel within a limited space in fire-boxes or on grates, consisting, essentially, of a flat or horizontal portion adapted to cover a portion of the grate, and vertical walls at the opposite ends of the flat port-ion, to enable the device to be used at either end of the fire-box, substantially as set forth.
2. An adjustable device for confining fuel with in a limited space in fire-boxes, consisting, essentially, of a horizontal plate and vertical plates secured to opposite ends of the horizontal plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 29th day of January, 1884.
MARY FRANCE.
