'To all whomz'z may concern" l j Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Pinnen, a citizen of the `United States, `residing at Chicago, in the county'of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new-and use ful Improvements 1n Furnace-Grates, Vof
which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to yfurnace grates,
and one Objectis to provide a sectional grate of novel construction which can be readily assembled for use and wherein any section can be easily replaced atsmall cost in case it should become damaged.
A further object isto arrange the connecting parts of the sections in such manner that they will notbe directly exposed `to a fire on the grate, and consequently cannot" easily burn out.
A further object is to provide a grate haying a conical portion to elevate part of thefburning fuel, so that air can penetrate all sides of the fiame and thus aid in the consumption of gases and other combustible elements which usually escape unconsume'd from the furnace.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and in order that said invention may be fully understood, `reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a furnace provided with my grate.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on line IIkII of Fig. 1, withrthe lower portion of a boiler added.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the central, circular, conical portion of the grate.
Fig. 4 is a broken detail perspective of parts of the central portion of the grate ready for assembly.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a bellcrank to Vrotate the central portion of the grate.
Specification of Letters Patent. i a Patented Sept. 11, 1917. Y l applicati@ mea December 11,1915. sealara. 66,291.
B. yThe intermediate grate bars 3, in connection with `the two adjacent longitudinal` bars 2, `surround the conical central portion 1 andwhave depending 4marginal'flanges 3 to enter slots in the twoV adjacent longitudinal bars 2. The rockable gratebars 4 have trunmons 42l mounted in bearing bars 5, placed upon the transverse water tubes B at the` acenter plate 8 and segments 9 surrounding said center plate, to which they are detachably connected, so that the center plate or any of said segments can be readily replaced without `throwing away the entire conical portion 1.
The center plate 8 is substantially square in plan view and has quadrangular shaped corners 10, to fit into recesses 1()a in the adjacent corners of the 'segments 9, which are detachably connected by lugs and bolts 11 and 12, respectively.
Each margin of the center plate 8, between the quadrangular corners 10, has a recess 13 to receive a corresponding projection 14 on each segment 9. Each margin of the center plate 8 also has a downturned lip 15 to interlock with an upturned lip 16, extending inwardly from each segment 9 from a point below the projection 14. When the lips 15 and 16 are interlocked the projections 14 rest on lugs 10b integral with the quadrangular corners 10. By providing this arrangement of interlocking lips on the center plate 8 and the segments 9', it will be readily understood, that these parts are reliably but detachably connected and by arranging the interlocking lips as shown and described they are protected from direct contact with the fire upon the grate, and hence are not liable to burn out. The segments 9 have radial slots 17 for the downward passage of ashes and the upward passage of air therethrough.
The central, conical portion 1 has depending lugs 18 and is rotatably mounted upon a ccntrallydisposed shaft 19, journaled in a bearing 20, supported by a plurality of radial arms 21, secured` to the undersides of the intermediate bars 3` and the two longitudinal bars 2 Supporting said intermediate bars 3. Loosely mounted upon the shai't19 is a bell-crank 22, having *an AupWardlyextending finger 23 which normally stands below the lugs 18.
In order to Shake the central, conical p0rtiony 1 of the` grate,fa shaker rod, not shown,
` shown and described lthepreferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in thepconstruction, varrangement and proportionY of parts as properly fall Within the spirit and scope. of the claims;
