PATENT OFFICE@ RUDOLPH SOHROEDER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
FLOOR-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 318,661, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed April 24, 1S`-5.
o @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH SGHROEDER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved tile Hoor-covering which retains its elasticity throughout all the seasons, and the invention consists of a floor-covering formed of superposed layers of concrete, sand, and cement, in which latter the tiles are placed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section, of my improved floor-covering.
Similar letters of reference indicate eorrespending parts.
Referring to the drawings, a, b, and c represent three superposed layers of concrete, sand, and cement, which together form the support for the tiles d, that are set into the celnent before the same has hardened. The intermediate layer, b, of sand, between the foundation-layer a of concrete and the top layer, c, of cement, imparts to the floor-covering a certain degree of elasticity in all seasons, and
(No model.)
prevents the tiles from being upset in the winter season by lthe upward pressure of the ground.
I am aware that tiles have been laid heretofore on a foundation of concrete and cement, which, however, renders the tile flooring rigid and the tile pavements liable to break and become uneven. This is entirelyT avoided by my interposed layer of sand, as it neutralizes the infiuence of changes of temperature, and the tiles set into the cement.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A door-covering composed of a foundation-layer of concrete, an intermediate layer of sand, a superposed layer of cement, and door-tiles set into the cement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLPH SCHROEDER.
