No. 302,280.' Patented July 22, 1884.

.IOIINv PORTER, OE NEW OUMRERLAND, WEsT VIRGINIA.
PAVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent No. 302,280l dated July' 22, 1884.
' Application filed May 24, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PORTER, of New Cumberland, in the county of Hancock and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pavements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in pavements; and it consists in a pavement constructed as hereinafter more fully appears. I will now describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art may manufacture and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved pavement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the foundation.
. Like letters -of reference indicate like parts wherever they occur.
My improved pavement is composed of a foundation, a, consisting of a layer or flooring of brick or slabs of stone or vitreous material-such as is described in my application filed of even date with this application, Serial No. 132,669-laid edge to edge on their sides and breaking joint, so as to completely cover the surface of the spaceon which the pavement is to be constructed. This flooring may be'flat or arched, as is desired. Above the flooring ce is a layer of sand, b, or other suitable material, arched along its upper surface, and on this sand b is laid a layer of paving blocks or bricks. c, which blocks or bricks may be of any material, shape, and size. I preferto form them, however, from clay burned into bricks, either common clay or fire-clay.
The advantages of this pavement are its elasticity, durability, and the perfect drainage Obtained.
Instead of sand, cinder or other suitable material may be employed.
l I am aware that a iooring of wood beneath a layer of sand and a top or wearing-surface of blocks of various kinds have been used in building pavements, and I do not desire to claim the same; but,
Having thus described my inv ention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A pavement consisting of an upper and lower strata of paving blocks Or bricks and an intervening layer of sand, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A pavement consisting of a foundation of slabs, blocks, or bricks placed on their side edge to edge, breaking joint, a superincumbent layer Of sand, and an upper and Outer layer of paving blocks or bricks, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN PORTER.
