Description

No. 31,851. 1 PATENTBD 111111526, 1861.
J. W. 111111.` DUMPING WAGON UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.I
JOHN WRIGHT NYE, OF FAIRFIELD, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND GEO. W. BALL,
' OF ST. ALBANS,r VERMONT.
DUMPING-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,851, dated March 26, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN VVIGHT NYE, of Faireld, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Dumping-VVagon; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of whichV Figure 1, is a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevition; and Fig.' 4, longitudinal sections o it.
Vhile` Fig. 3 represents the positions of the divisional partitions and bottom platforms when prepared for the reception of a load, Fig. 4 is made so as to exhibit their positions while in the act of discharging a load.
In the drawings, A, represents the body or frame of the wagon which consists principally of two upright side frames a, a, arranged parallel to one another at a suitable distance apart and connected by the rear axle B, a series of rods or bars I, I, I, I, and a bearing bar O, the latter being arranged so as to rest on the front or'turning axle D, and be connected to it by a transom bolt E. Each axle has two wheels F, F.
A series of divisional partit-ions Gr, G1, G2, G3, is arranged between the two side frames or boards, a, a, and so as to extend from one to the other as shown in the drawings. Neither of the said' partitions is directly connected to the side frames, but at its lower part each is affixed to and elevated on and at right angles to one of a series of trap boards or bottom platforms H, H1, H2, H3. Each of the said platforms is supported on and hinged to one of the cross or connection bars I, I, I, I, the arrangement of which in respect to the said platforms being as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. It should be observed that each platform at its front edge laps over that which is next in front of it or is received into a right angular recess or rabbet made in the latter as shown at o. Furthermore, a series of studs or pins cl, CZ, d, (l, is placed in each side frame a, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. These pins serve as supports for the rear parts of the platforms when such partitions are in position as represented in Fig.
3. i Each divisional partition is further con nected to its trap board or platform by means of two inclined struts or braces c, e, extending from one to the other as shown in Figs. l and 3. `At the rear end of the wagon body is a tail board f, which may be applied thereto in any proper manner, either to render it stationary in or capable of being removed from the wagon body as circumstances may require. To the front face of each of the divisional partitions a handle, g, may be aflixed.
In consequence of each platform being furnished with a right angular recess to receive the next adjacent platform in the rear, the vertical side of such recess while against such rear platform will constitute a shoulder or bearing which will operate to prevent the platform having the recess from being tipped from a horizontal into an inclined position. Inother words, until such platform is tipped out of the recess of that platform which is next in front of it, the shoulder will operate to prevent the latter platform from being tipped so as to discharge a load.
The divisional partitions, when the wagon is loaded with earth or manure also oper ate to prevent the accidental tipping of the platforms, and furthermore by being connected with the platforms and disconnected from the sides a, o, of the carriage body, the divisional partitions afford a means by which a person can readily tip the platforms either when the carriage is loaded or not. Each of the divisional partitions: by being connected to and made movable with one` of Vthe platforms, facilitates, while being moved with the platform, the discharge of the load from the platform next in front of it.
Tith a carriage constructed on my improved plan, either' the whole or a part of a load may be dumped so as to be in separate heaps. For the transportation and 'dropping manure or other matters my improved wagon has been found very useful on a farm.
I do not claim a wagon constructed with its bottom composed either in whole or in part of hinged doors or flaps arranged so as to be capable of being turned down from a horizontal into either an inclined or Vertical toms or platforms, (H, H1, H2, H) applied position in order 'to discharge the contents to the Wagon body (A,) and disposed thereof such Wagon when necessary so to do; but in and with respect to one another substan- I claimtially as specied.
The improved dumping Wagon as con- JOHN TIGHT NYE. struoted With the divisional partitions (G, lVitnesses: G1, G2, G33) arranged and combined and so WM. BRIDGES, as to operate as described, With hinged bot- L. GILMAN.
