Description

(No Model.)
M. P. ISMAY.
DOOR OLOSEE.
No. 318,258. Patented May 19, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MATTHEW PARKER ISMAY, OF NEWOASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND.
DOOR-CLOSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,258, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed January 5, 1885. (No model.) Patentedin England December 22, 1884, No. 16,818.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW PARKER Is- MAY, druggist, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at l Sydenham Terrace, in the city of Newcastle-upon- Tyne, England, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Effecting the Automatic Closing of Doors, (for which I have made application in Great Britain,No. 16,818, dated December 22, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a cheap and efficient apparatus, which is readily affixable to existing doors for effecting the automatic closing of the same.
The said apparatus consists of a weighted lever hinged at one end to the door and attached by a cord, rod, or other connection with the door framing or equivalent fixed part. The saidlever, when the door is closed, is in its lowest position, and when the door is opened the connection between the lever and the framing or wall elevates the lever, so that when the door is released the said lever in falling by gravity effects the closing of the door; and in order that my said invention may be fully understood, I shall now proceed more particularly to describe the same, and for that purpose shall refer to the several figures on the annexed sheet of drawings, the same letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a door provided with an apparatus constructed according to my invention.
The lever A is provided with a counterweighted end, I), and is connected to the door by a joint at e, on which it can be raised as on a hinge. The end of the said lever has affixed to it one end of a cord, rod, or other connection, d, the other end of the said connection being affixed to the door-framing or other fixed part. When the door is opened, the connection d causes the lever A to be raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and when the door is released the said lever A-falls by gravity, and, owing to its attachment to the connection d, the door is automatically closed.
I .do not limit myself to the precise details shown in the drawings, as they may, it is evident, be varied without departing from the nature of my invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is The combination, with the door and the frame thereof, of thelever A, connected at one end to said door, the connection 01, connected at one end to said door-frame and at the other to the lever A, and the weight 12, supported by said lever A, all arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
