United States Patent O 3,181,859 SIDE REGISTER MEANS FOR CLOTH SPREADING APPARATUS Raymond E. Sayles, Kansas City, Mo., assignor to Pennway Garment Company, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Filed Dec. 31, 1962, Ser. No. 248,763 2 Claims. (Cl. 270-31) This invention relates to improvements in cloth spreading apparatus of the type primarily used in garment manufacturing industries.
In garment manufacturing, and particularly in the making of suits and coats, the cloth or fabric is often heavy, expensive and difficult to handle. To facilitate mass production methods, a plurality of cloth layers are placed on a work table with great care to prevent stretching or wrinkling and usually with one side edge of the fabric in close alignment with overlaying layers. This operation heretofore usually required the services of several highly skilled persons who command Va high salary. To compound the difficulty the layers of cloth or fabric must often be pair-faced. In pair-facing the nap or exterior side of the cloth layers are placed faceto-face in succeeding pairs so that by later constructing a seam adjacent aligned edges the fabric or cloth may be opened into symmetrical garment parts secured together on opposite sides of the seam. In pair-facing, a roll or bolt of fabric is commonly supported on a horizontal axis and a portion of cloth unrolled or spread over specified lengths on a horizontal table and then severed from the roll. The roll is then usually transported to the point where the preceding cloth layer was started, rotated 180 about a vertical axis, and the next layer of cloth spread over the first layer with the nap of the two layers facing each other. This procedure is repeated until any desired number of pair-faced layers are resting superimposed on the table. As noted above, this must be achieved without stretching or wrinkling the fabric and with one side edge of the paired layers in close alignment.
Heretofore reciprocating carriages have been developed for spreading the fabric in layers on a table, which devices included means for rotating the roll or bolt of cloth about a vertical axis. Such apparatus, however,
' required at least two workmen to operate and subsequently align oneV edge of the layers, edge misalignment usually being caused by unevenly rolled cloth bolts. In
' spite of a high degree of skill some stretching of the fabric during edge aligning was considered unavoidable.
The principal objects of the present invention are: to provide a cloth spreading apparatus having pair-facing capabilities and which automatically controls the position of one side edge of the cloth being spread; to provide such apparatus which permits cloth spreading in multiple layers without stretching or wrinkling and without the need for highly skilled personnel; to provide fabric laying apparatusA which maybe easily adjusted and operated by a single workman while producing results unobtainable heretofore with several workmen; to provide such apparatus which requires no driving contact with the cloth roll, and to provide such apparatus which is relatively simple in construction and reliable in use.
Other objects and advantages `of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein are set forth by way of illustration and example certain embodiments of ,this invention.

Referring to the drawings in more detail:
The reference numeral 1 generally indicates apparatus embodying this invention for spreading cloth in multiple layers on an elongated table 2 having a guiding track 3 running along one side edge thereof. The apparatus 1 comprises a carriage generally designated 4 supported on front and rear side wheels 5 and 6 which contact :the table surface front and rear side wheels 7 and 8 which engage the track 3. The wheels 5, 6, 7 and 8 support the carriage 4 for reciprocal guided travel longitudinally over the elongated table 2.
A cylindrical cloth driving roller 9 preferably having a sandpaper-like exterior surface for engaging cloth without slipping is rotatably mounted on the carriage 4 between forwardly extending brackets 10 and 11 secured to vertical structural members 12 and 13 forming a part of the carriage 4. The cloth driving roller 9 extends horizontally and transversely of the table 2 and includes a mounting shaft 14 terminating at one end thereof in an over-running clutch 15; The clutch 15 supports a sprocket 16 engaged with a sprocket chain 17 which also engages a double idler sprocket 18 rotatably mounted on an upstanding member 19 fixed to and forming a part of the carriage 4. The table contacting front wheel 5 is rotatably lixed with respect to a gear 20 which meshes v with a reversing idler gear 21. The idler gear 21 is ixed on a rotatable shaft 22 which also supports a sprocket 23 engaging a chain 24 which in turn engages the idler sprocket 18. The relative pitch diameters of the various gears and sprockets above described are such that when the carriage is urged rearwardly, that is, in the direction indicated by the arrow 25, the driving roller 9 is driven vthrough the rotation of the wheel 5 at a speed wherein -the peripheral surface of the roller 9 moves in exact `synchronization with the displacement yof the carriage that is, in the direction indicated by the arrows 25 the over-running clutch 15 slips so that there is no driving engagement between the wheel 5 and roller 9.
J .9 Spaced parallel elongated front and rear angles 26 and 27 are fixed to the carriage 4 and form spaced tracks 28 and 29 extending transversely of the table 2. A frame Vsupport 30 includes a horizontal elongated transversely extending base member 31 having forwardly and rearwardly extending shafts 32 and 33 fixed thereto and respectively terminating at opposite ends thereof in rollers 4 engaged with the tracks 28 and 29. The rollers 34 cooperate with the tracks 28 and 29 to permit a reciprocal lateral movement of the frame support 30 with respect to the carriage 4.
The carriage 4 includes a longitudinal central strut 35 extending transversely of the base member 31 and having a horizontal sprocket 36 rotatably mounted thereon. A chain 37 is engaged with the sprocket 36 and also with a sprocket 38 forming part of a reversable driving apparatus broadly designated 39 described more fully hereinafter. The chain 37 is secured by means of a lug 40 to the base member 31 whereby the rotation of the sprocket 38 in opposite directions results in a lateral reciprocation of the frame support 30 on the tracks 28 and 29.
A frame 41 has a do-wnwardly disposed thrust bearing 42 connected to the frame support 30 for supporting the frame 41 while permitting selective rotation thereof 180 in either direction about a vertical central axis 43 into oppositely facing cloth dispensing positions transversely of the carriage 4. The frame 41 includes laterally spaced upwardly extending standards 44 and 45 having upwardly open notches 46 at the upper ends respectively thereof.
A horizontally extending shaft 47 is adapted to axially support a bolt or roll 48 of cloth and rotate therewith when the cloth is unwound. The shaft 47 has opposite axial extensions 49 and 56 respectively received in the standard notches 46 and freely rotatably supported by the standards 44 and 45 on spaced bearing rollers 51 mounted on the standards at the base of the notches 46. The shaft 47 thereby supports the cloth roll 48 for rotation while elevated above and behind the driving roller 9 as best illustrated in FIG. 2.
The shaft extension 49 has a gear 52 fixed thereto and meshing with an idler gear 53 rotatably mounted on the standard 44. A sprocket 54 is fixed to and rotates with the idler gear 53 and is engaged with a chain 55. The chain 55 is engaged with a sprocket 56 forming the input of an electrically operated brake 57 secured to the standard 44. When the brake 57 is actuated, the rotation of the shaft 47 and thus the roll is retarded without touching the cloth. However, when the brake 57 is released the weight of unrolled fabric or cloth at 58 which extends downwardly from the roll 48 is suicient to induce unwinding of the roll 48.
A threading member 59 includes spaced side arms 60 and an elongated idler roller cross arm 61. The side arms 66 are respectively pivotally mounted at one end thereof on the standards 44 and 45 beneath the roll shaft 47 and each side arm 66 has the other end thereof secured to and supporting the cross arm 61. The cross arm 61 is swingable on the arms 60 ybetween the standards 44 and in an arc indicated by the broken lines at 62 placing the cross arm spaced above the driving roller 9 regardless of the rotated transverse position of the frame 41. A threading control shaft 63 is rotatably mounted on and extends between the standards 44 and 45 below the lowest point of the arc 62. Sprockets 64 are iixed to the threading control shaft 63 and engage with respective chains 65, Sprockets 66 are connected through stud shafts to each of the side arms 60 and rotate therewith when the cross arm 61 swings through the arc 62. The chains 65 respectively engage the sprockets 66 whereby the rotation of the threading control shaft 63 results in a swinging of the cross arm 61 in the arc 62. Lever arms designated 67 are xed to the threading control shaft 63 and extend radially therefrom at opposite ends of the 4 frame 41 for conveniently remotely pivoting the cross arm 61.
Arms or lugs 68 extend radially outwardly from the sprockets 66 and rotate therewith, Locking arms 69 are pivotally mounted to the respective standards 44 and 45 and are adapted to engage with the lugs 68 to maintain the cross arm 61 in either of the two oppositely extending positions which place the cross arm above the cloth driving roller 9 regardless of the rotational transverse position of the frame 41.
A floating framework 70 includes a shaft 71 extending transversely of the carriage 4 and pivotally mounted on and between the brackets 10 and 11. A pair of spacedapart arms 72 are fixed to the shaft 71 and extend radially therefrom in the same direction. The framework shaft 71, in the illustrated example, is mounted slightly forwardly of and at substantially the same elevation as the cloth driving roller 9. The arms 72 are respectively located near opposite ends of the driving roller 9 and have outer or free ends 73 vertically Variable below the top of the driving roller 9 while positioned rearwardly of the driving roller. This positioning is permitted by the use of cut-out portions 74, or the like, which eliminate interference between the arms 72 and the driving roller mounting shaft 14 when the arms 72 are pivoted with the shaft 71 from a cloth threading position as illustrated in FIG. 5 to a cloth spreading position as indicated in FIG. 4.
An elongated idler roller 75 is mounted on and extends between the arm outer ends 73 for guiding cloth in a loop therearound from a vertically variable position behind and below the top of the driving roller 9 into engagement over the driving roller. The variable position of the loop about the idler roller 75 is determined by a balance between the tension on the fabric or cloth at 58 and the weight or downward force exerted by the idler roller 75.
A cam 76 is fixed to the shaft 71 and engages a cam follower 77 on the actuating arm 7S of a switch 79 fixed to the forwardly extending bracket 11. The cam 76 has a cam surface depression 80 so located with the respect to the arms 72 and cam follower 77 that the cam actuates the switch to off position when the idler roller 75 reaches a relatively high position as illustrated by the broken lines at 81 and actuates the switch to on position when the idler roller is relatively low as at 82. The switch 79 is electrically connected to the brake 57 and the switch `actuation due to the high position of the idler roller 75 causes the brake to release thus relieving rotational drag of the cloth roll 48. The attaining of the lower position of the idler roller 75 causes the switch 79 to produce an actuation of the brake, applying rotational drag on the roll 48. Thus, the cloth freely unrolls under its own weight unless excessive cloth is produced between the driving roller 9 and the cloth roll 48 whereupon the brake 57 places rotational drag on the shaft 47 to the extent required to obtain control.
Elongated transversely extending structure 83 is vertically slidably mounted on the carriage vertical members 12 and 13 and supports elongated cloth guiding members 84 forming a transverse slot 85 adapted to receive and guide cloth from the cloth driving roller 9 for spreading on the table. A suitable traveling cutting mechanism 86 is housed in the structure 83 and is associated with the slot forming members 84 for selectively transversely severing the cloth at any position desired on the table, usually at the end of a cloth layer. The cutting mechamsm 86 is powered by a suitable driving motor 87 mounted on the structure 83. The vertical height of the cloth guiding members 84 is adjustable through oppositely disposed chains 88 and 89 secured to the structure 83as spaced positions 90 and engaged with pairs of vertically separated sprockets 91 rotatably mounted on the vertical members 12 and 13. A manually rotatable sprocket assembly 92 is mounted on the carriage 4 and engages the chain 89 for rotating the sprockets 91 and thereby changing the height of the structure 83. A shaft 93 extends between and is fixed to a pair of oppositely disposed sprokets 91 for transmitting the adjusting rotation equally between the chain 89 and the chain 88.
A bifurcated bracket 94 has one leg 95 thereof pivotally mounted to the carriage 4 by means of a pillow block 96 and oppositely extending legs 97 and 97 respectively terminating in clamping members 98 and 99. The clamping member 98 supports edge scanning apparatus 100 comprising, in the illustrated example, inner and outer horizontally spaced-apart light sensitive photomembers 101 and 102 respectively of the type known as light dependent resistors. The clamping member 98 normally supports the photomembers 101 and 102 in a position whereby the vertical path of the cloth as delineated by one side edge 103 thereof covers only the inner photomember 101. The clamping member 99 supports a suitable light source 104 spaced from the photomembers 101 and 102`on the opposite side of the edge 103 and directed' toward the photomembers whereby the cloth normally casts a shadow on the inner photomember 101 but shines directly into the outer photomember 102. Suitable electrical wires extend through the various legs of the bracket 94 for powering the light source 104 and carrying signals'from the edge scanning apparatus 100. The clamping member 98 supports the edge scanning apparatus 100 in a manner whereby the latter may be adjustably rotated about a horizontal axis extending substantially parallel to the direction of emission of the light source 104, which rotation alters the horizontal distance between the photomembers 101 and 102 for increasing the sensitivity of scanning in a manner which will become apparent hereinafter.
The leg 95 of the bracket 94, in the illustrated example, communicates with a switch 105 on the opposite side of the pillow block 96, the switch being adapted to actuate when the bracket 94 is pivoted upwardly and outwardly toward the position indicated by the broken lines at 106. Preferably the actuation of the switch 105 occurs after only a few degrees of motion out of the normal scanning position of the bracket 94 as illustrated in solid lines, FIG. 4. The purpose of the switch 105 is to deactuate the frame lateral positioning circuit described hereinafter to prevent useless hunting thereof during a cloth threading operation.
The sprocket 38 described above (FIG. 9) is fixed to the shaft of a driving assembly 107 comprising a reversible driving motor 108, a gear reducer 109, and a clutch-brake device 110. The driving assembly 107 is adapted to selectively drive the chain 37 in opposite directions for laterally shifting the cloth roll supporting frame 41 and the clutch-brake device is associated therewith in a Well known manner to rapidly stop the traverse of the frame when called for while permitting the motor 108 to expend the inertia built up therein and in the gear reducer 109.
The driving assembly 107 is operatively electrically connected to the photomembers 101 and 102 as schematically illustrated in FIG. ll. An electrical source 111 which may be the output of a suitable rectifier, transformer, or the like (not shown) has one leg 112 thereof connected in series through the switch 105 and to one side of the respective photomembers 101 and 102. The other leg 113 of the source 111 is connected in series tlnough a single pole relay 114 and a double pole relay 115 which respectively connect to the other sides of the photomembers 102 and 101. It is to be understood that light striking the respective photomembers causes a drop in internal resistance permitting sufi-icient current to ow through the respective relays for actuating same, the relays becoming deactuated when the photomembers are shielded from the light delivered by the light source A104. The switch contacts of the respective relays 114 and 115 are connected to the reversing motor 108 and clutch-brake device 110 in a suitable manner whereby when the photomember 101 is covered and the photomember 102 uncovered the cloth roll is locked in lateral position, but when both photomembers become uncovered the driving assembly 107 is actuated to shift the cloth roll in one direction until the edge 103 is again between the photomembers as illustrated. If both photomembers become covered `the reversing motor is actuated to turn in the opposite direction whereupon the cloth roll is again shifted but in the opposite direction toward a position where the edge 103 is again between the photomembers. The last named position causes a deactuation of the motor 108 and locks the cloth roll in the attained lateral position.
In operation a roll of fabric or cloth, which may be unevenly rolled as illustrated at 116, is placed on the standards 44 and 45. The bracket 94 is pivoted to the position indicated at 106 and the floating framework 70 is moved to the position indicated by the broken lines at 117. The latter movement is facilitated by a suitable handle 118 fixed to the shaft 71, FIG. 4. Before moving the floating framework 70 a knob 119 is twisted to rotate a pin 120 out of the way so that a lug 121 fixed to the shaft '71 may clear for rotating the floating framework 70. The cloth roll 48, although retarded by the brake 57 (actuated due to the depressing of the switch arm 78 caused by the substantially 180 rotation of the cam 76), may be unrolled by a workman. vThe unrolled cloth is then suspended above the cloth` driving roller 9 by swinging the threading member 59 and the member 59 secured in the cloth suspending position by a locking arm 69. The end of the cloth is then directed through the sl'ot 85 after being threaded between the shaft 71 and the driving roller 9. The floating framework 70 is then pivoted toward the cloth by means of the handle 118 whereupon the idler roller 75 urges the cloth into a loop which causes frictional Contact with a substantial portion of the driving roller 9. When the floating framework 78 is in operating position the knob 119 is twisted in the opposite direction whereupon the pin 120 is engaged by the lug 121 in the event that unexpected tension on the cloth causes the idler roller 75 to rise an excessive amount, for example, due to extreme carriage acceleration or a mechanicalV or electrical malfunction.
The bracket 94 is then pivoted to operating position whereupon the edge scanning apparatus becomes operable to laterally correct the position of the cloth edge 103 as the cloth is spread on the table by urging the carriage rearwardly, that is, in the direction indicated by the arrow at 122. At the end `olf the desired length of spread the cloth is severed with the cutting mechanism 86 Aand the carriage fis returned to the beginning position. If it is desired to pair-face the subsequent layers of fabric the bracket 94 and framework 70 are pivoted away from the cloth and a solenoid release mechanism 123 is used. The mechanism 123 is secured to the frame support 30 and has a plunger 124 enga'geable with opprositely positioned receiving sockets 125 and 126 on .the under-side of the frame 41. By pressing a suitable pushabutton '12.7 the plunger 124 is 4withdrawn permitting the frame to rotate about a Vertical axis thus rotating the cloth roll 48 to a position facing from the original whereupon the opposite socket is engaged by the plunger 4124. The threading member 59 is then pivoted or swung to the oppositely extending position with the cloth draped thereover and the member 59 supported by a locking `arm 69 whereupon the loose end of the cloth is again suspended therefrom and the threading procedure is repeated. If desired, the ibracket 94 may be left in operating position whereupon the edge of the cloth roll 48 is scanned to shi-ft the cloth r-oll to a proper edge-aligned position 'with the spread cloth layer prior to engaging the cloth with the driving roller 9. It is noted that this may `also be done prior to spreading the `first layer of tfabric in the event the cloth roll is seen to be out of desired initial position prior to threading.
Suitable further manual contro-ls indicated at 128 are provided on the carriage 4 4for actuating the various electrical systems and switching housepower to the apparatus Which is received through a suitable trolley system at 129. An electrical conduit box 130 is secured to the carriage 4 for conveniently containing the relays V114 and 1115 yand other equipment su'ch as transformers or rectiers and the Ilike (not shown).
It is .to be understood that While one form of this invention has been illustrated yand described, it is not to Ibe limited -to the specic form or arrangement of parts herein described and shown except insofar as such limitations are included in the claims.
