JAMES MONTGOMERY SEYMOUR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STOVE ATTACHMENT FOR GRATES.
araoirroarroiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,86i, dated May 12 1885. Applioationliled July 5; 1884. (No model.)
To all. whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jmuns M. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in thecounty of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments for Grates and FirePlaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the name, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stove attachment for fire-places. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 00 w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof the front portion of my improved stove attachment detached from the grate. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the horizontal supportingplates. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rear flue detached from the top plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the top plate. Fig. 7
is a vertical sectional view taken through one of the bolts by means of which the adj ustable flue is connected to the top plate, showing the said top plate and flue in position; and Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view taken through one end of the top plate and the adjustable flue-plate.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improved attachment for grates or fire-places, by means of which the same may be converted into a stove or range for cooking or heating purposes; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A designates the front part of my improved attachn1ent,which consists of a suitably-constructed plate provided with doors B B, having draft-openings G, for which suitable valves or vents, c, are provided. The sides of the said plate have flanges E, and its upper edge is provided at the ends with rearwardly-extending plates G G, adapted to support the horizontal plates, which will be hereinafter described.
H H are side plates, which are connected adjustably to the front plate by means of nuts and bolts, which latter pass through the slot ted arms I I, which extend laterally from the said side pieces in an inward direction. Owing to this construction, the device may be fitted to grates or fireplaces of different widths.
J J designate the supporting-plates, which are provided. at their rear ends with outwardly-extending rods or pintles K K, adapted to enter recesses L, drilled or formed for their reception in the rear part of the fire-brick or lining of the grate or fire-place.
M designates the top of my improved grate attachment, which is provided with suitable detachable covers, N' N, and the rear edge of which is cut away, as shown at 0, so as to accommodate the flue-plate P. The latter is provided with a draft-opening, Q, having a suitable revolving vent-plate, R, and provided with a transversely-pivoted damper, S. The said flue-plate is connected to the top plate of the device by means of transverse horizontal pivots T T, adjusted in lugs U U, formed upon the said top plate and at the ends ofthe flueplate, and the latter may be adjusted to any desired angle with relation to the top plate by means of the nuts V V, fitted upon screwthreaded shanks WV W, that extend upwardly from the top plate at a point near the rear edge of the latter. These nuts are titted above and below a pair of bifurcated shanks, X X, which extend forwardly from the flue-plate, and which embrace the screw-threaded shanks, so that by adjusting the nuts upon the latter the said flue-plate may be tilted to such position as shall enable it to fit nicely against the throat ofthe chimney, while at the same time it will be retained securely in the position to which it is adjusted.
The front plate of my improved attachment is provided with a perforation, Y, adapted to receive the screw-threaded end of the shank of a hook, Z, which is adapted to be fitted over one of the grate-bars of the fire-place to which my device is adjusted. The front end of the said screw-threaded shank is provided with a nut, by tightening which the device may be secured firmly in position.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. In order to put the device in posi- 5 the supporting-plates. The front plate is then placed in position, and the front ends of the supporting-plates are rested upon the flanges at the upper edge of the same, the side plates having of course been adjusted to the Width of the grate or fire-place. It should be understood that the size or width of the top plates may be varied according to the width of the fireplace. The top plate is neXt placed in position and secured to the front plate by means of an angular slotted clamp secured to the upper edge of the said front plate.
the under side of the said top plate by means of a screw or bolt, and fitting in a notch, A, in The angular hook is then fitted around one of the grate-bars and the nut upon its outer end tightened, thus securing the entire device firmly in position. i
It will be seen that the flue-plate may be easily adjusted to suit the throat or opening of a chimney of any construction.
Having thus described my invention, I do not in this present application claim anything which forms the subject-matter of the 7 claims in another application filed by me on the 26th day of March, 1884; but
What I herein claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a stove attachment for grates and fireplaces, the combination, with a front plate 5 having adjustable side plates and provided at its upper edge with rearwardlyextending flanges, of the supporting-plates provided at 7 their rear ends with prongs adapted to enter suitable recesses in the fire-brick or lining of the grate, and having their front ends resting upon the flanges at the upper end of the front plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stove attachment for grates or fireplaces, the combination, with a suitable front plate and supporting-plates,of atop plate and a flue-plate secured pivotally to the latter, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the curved front plate having adjustable side plates and provided at its upper edge with rearwardly-extending flanges, of the supporting-plates havin g pins or prongs at their rear edges adapted to enter suitable recesses provided for their reception in the fire-bricks or lining of the plate, and the top plate having a pivoted and adjustable flue or throat plate, substantially as set forth.
4. In an adjustable stove attachment for grates or fire-places, the combination, with the top plate or cover having a cut-awayportion at its rear edge and provided with upwardly extending screw threaded pins or bolts and perforated lugs, of the adjustable flue-plate having suitable pivoting-lugs, forwardly-extending forked arms, and provided with a curved portion fitting in the recess at the rear edge of the top plate, and equipped with a suitably-constructed valve and a damper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MONTGOMERY SEYMOUR.
