CHIMNEY TOP AND VENTILATOR.
No. 317,718. Patented May 12, 1885.
ATTORNEYS UNIT D STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV BURKHARDT, OF HOMER, ILLINOIS.
CHIMNEY TOP AND VENTlLATOFt.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,718, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed July 24, 1884. (No model.)
in thecounty of Champaign and State of Illi-- nois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney Tops and Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of ventilators and chimney-tops in which is employed a helical draft-channel; and the objects of my invention are to provide novel means for supporting the helix, whereby an upward draft is created in the latter by the wind or air currents, and to provide novel means for deflecting the smoke in an outward direction above the helix.
The objects of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the construction and com bination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanyin g drawings, illustrating my invention, in which Figure l is a vertical cross-section of the en ire device as adapted for use as a chimneytop. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the base of the device which base A is fastened to the top of a chimney or other suitable place.
B is a conical smoke-pipe attached to the base A in the usual manner.
I is a helical draft-channel formed by a fiat strip, E, which is inclined to the axis of the chimney in the direction of its breadth, being wound helically, as shown.
G is a double conical crown secured to the upper end of the smoke-pipe B,.and to the upper conical side of which the strip E, forming the channel I, is secured.
d d are strips serving as ties for thehelical draft-pipe, and also to support the cover F, which serves to keep out the rain. To the under side of the cover F is secured an inverted cone, J, for increasing the efficiency of the smoke-stack by deflecting the smoke in an outward direction directly above the helix formed by the strip E.
H H are braces supporting the smokepipe B.
The object of this helical channel I is to cause the air to pass along its windings producing an effect in draft equal to a chimney of considerable more height-that is to say, it increases the virtual height of the chimney.
The object of the double conical crown (J at the upper end of the smoke-pipe is twofold: its upper conical side serves to support the helix, and the wind or air current, striking such side, causes an upward draft in the helical channel, and thereby renders the ventilator very efficient in operation.
I do not broadly claim aventilator composed of a helical channel at the upper end of a pipe and provided with a conical cover; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the smoke-pipe, the double conical crown secured to the upper end thereof, and the helical channel supported by the upper conical side of the crown, said upper conical side of the crown also serving to create an upward draft in the helical channel, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pipe B, the helical draft-channel I at the upper end thereof, the inverted cone J above the channel, and the cover F over the cone, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the pipe B, the double conical crown O, secured to the upper end thereof, the helical channel I, supported by the upper conical side of the crown, and the inverted cone J, supported above the helical channel, substantially as described.
4.. The combination of the pipe B, the double conical crown O, secured to the upper end thereof, the helical channel I, supported by the upper conical side of the crown, the rods d, aeting as ties to the helical channel, the cover F, supported above the helical channel by the tierods, and the inverted'cone J under the cover, substantially as described. I t In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two'sub Witnesses:
J. H. WAPLES, F. W. STONEBURNER.
