VENTlLATOR-SMOKESTACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,113, dated August 27, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, Oscar: RICHARD KUEHNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilator- Smokestacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is partly a side view and partly a sectional View; the section being taken where the broken line a; m is shown on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken where the broken line 2 z is shown on Fig. 2.
This invention has relation to ventilatorsmokestacks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main pipe of the stack, which is provided with a downwardlyflaring base B, designed to fit upon the top of the smokeopening of a locomotive or upon a chimney.
0 represents a surrounding cylinder-jacket,
. which is parallel to the main smoke-pipe A,
and is connected thereto. Between the main pipe A and cylinder 0 is an annular passage D, which is entirely open at its lower end, and at its upper end is provided with openings o; a, into the chamber E above the main pipe, said chamber having about double the sectional area of that of the main pipe, and being bounded by the upper portion of the cylinder wall, which is extended upward beyond the level of the top of the main pipe for this purpose. The lower end of the cylinder C is provided with an outwardly-curved flange b, which is above the slope c of the base B, and forms therewith an annular mouth or entrance to the annular passage D. The upper end of the cylinder is provided with a downwardly and outwardly inclined flange F, below which are formed a series of openings g in the wall of the cylinder, said openings having tongues h extending inmargins Z, connected at their lower ends to the lower flange of the cylinder 0. These conemouths are arranged in series around the cylinder 0 and below its upper flange F. Openings m are made at the inner ends or apices of these cone-mouths, leading into the enlargement or chamber E, and extending inward from the cylinder-wall just below these openings are the connections L, which support the cylinder from the main pipe.
Above the cylinder, and separated therefrom by an interval, as at N, is the cap V, in the form of a flattened cone, supported by the rods 0 from the cylinder-wall. A central opening cl is made in said cap,this opening having a reversely-curved flange or guard Z, extending. upward and outward and forming the wall thereof, as shown.
The object of the invention is to provide a stack wherein windcurrents entering will assist the draft, and which is so guarded that such wind-currents cannot materially interfere with its office to conduct away the smoke and other products of combustion. 'The (3611'? tral opening in the cap provides a direct escape for the smoke. \Vhen wind is eddying around the stack, the curved flange ofsaid opening directs the wind upward and forming a draft. This flange also prevents the wind from blowing across the surface of the cap in a sheer manner.
The conical passages or months K act in a powerful manner to effect an upward draft within the upper chamber of the stack on account of their form, causing the air-currents to converge and enter through the inlets m in a forcible manner.
The annular passage between the cylinder 0 and the main pipe receives the wind through the lower annular mouth above the K K are conical mouths having ellipsoidal base and conveys it upward through the IOO formed mouths is directed upwardly into the chamber E, through the opening g and their tongues h, by the inclined annular flange F at the upper end of the cylinder 0.
By this construction it is designed \to pro vide for controlling the operation of Windcurrents upon the stack, so that they shall conduce to a strong upward-draft action within the chamber E and avoid choking the main pipe and fire-box With smoke.
Having described this invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A Smokestack consisting of the main pipe having a flaring base, and an outer parallel cylinder having top and bottom flanges and forming an annular passage around said presence of two witnesses.
