UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON E. SPRINGSTEEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
POLE-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,681, dated May 12, 1885.
Application tiled March 18, 1885. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLsoN E. SPRING- sTEEN, of Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of lllichigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in W'agon-Iole Irons; and I do hereby declare that the fol- 'lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom- Y panying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
rBhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wagonpole irons; and the -invention consists in the peculiar coinbinations and the construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.
4Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through the end of a wagon-tongue provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the end of the brace, showing seat for the free end of the dog. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan. Fig. 4 is a side elevation ot' a neckyoke.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, A represents the end of a wagon-tongue upon which is secured the tip B by means of suitable bolts. Upon the underside ot' the tongue is secured a brace, C, into which the lower end of the holdback pin or bolt D is rigidly secured, while the free end of the brace has formed on its edges the lips or flanges, b.
Eis a dog one end of which is pivotallyse cured in the tip-iron B, its free end resting between the lips b of the brace C. This dog E is provided with a shoulder, c, which, when the dog is raised, enters the recess a formed in the tongue.
In practice, when it is desired to hitch up,77 the end of the tongue is passed through the the ring G of the neck-yoke until arrested by the holdbackpin D. 'This necessarily raises the dog E until the ring has passed beyond its free end, when it drops to place in front of the ring.
The function of the neckyoke is to support the end of the tongue and to act as a stop or holdback to prevent the wagon running onto the horses, and should one of the traces break, the tongue is liable to drop out of the neckyoke ring and ca-use the horses to run away.
In the construction herein described it will be seen that should one of the traces break the tongue would not drop out of the neck-yoke ring, for the ring` would slide up the dog and engage with its shoulder c, and by which the wagon would be drawn, even should all the traces become detached, and the horses would be quite as much under control as though drawing by the traces.
I am aware of the Patents Nos.. 192,159 and 200,643, and make no claim to the construction shown therein as forming part ot' my invention.
What I claim as my invention is- The tongue A, recessed as described, the tip-iron B, the brace C, secured to the under side of said tongue and provided with the hole .c'l/ and iianges b, and the pin D, passed through said hole, tongue, and tip-iron, and having its lower end rigidly secured to said brace, in combination with the dog E,pivotal1ysecured in said tip-iron within the recess in the tongue and provided with the shoulder o, and its free end adapted to rest on the brace C between its flanges b, substantially as described.
