Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
JOHN L. ROWE, OF NEV YORK, N. Yl., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND T. RUDDERFORTH, OF i SAME PLAGE.
ICE-CRUSHER.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 31,766, dated March 19, 1861. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. RowE, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Ice-Crushers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of, the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein I have represented a vertical section of my said invention. i
For soda water, lemonade and other liquids drank in summer time particularly, it is necessary to introduce ice to render them palatable. It is now usual to crack a lump of ice up into small pieces by striking the same while held in the hand, this operation is unpleasant because of the cold and wetness to the hand, and beside this the iceis not sufliciently comminuted to act quickly in coo-ling the liquid into which it is introduced.
Wy said invention is intended to crack or grind up pieces of ice sufficiently small for the foregoing purposes and consists in a fluted roller applied in a hopper, one side of which is movable, the parts acting in suoli a manner` that upon revolving the iuted roller the ice is crushed and broken into small pieces adapted to use in soda water, lemonade, beer Sac.; or the ice thus crushed up may be applied in ice cream freezers or under any similar circumstances.
In the drawing a, is a luted roller the aXes of which are sustained in the end pieces Vof the hopper b, and said hopper may be sustained upon legs c, so that a tumbler or other receptacle for the ice may be placed beneath. The roller a, is fluted lengthwise and the side d, of the hopper is to be iluted vertically and at right angles 0r nearly so to the flutes on o. The side el,
is to be attached to the end pieces of the hopper by gudgeons near the upper corners, so that the lower side can be brought nearer to or farther from the luted roller a, to regulate the size of the lumps of ice and a pawl or button c, ateach end of the hopper sustains the side d, at the required position. The roller a, may be revolved by a crank applied to one of the journals. I have however shown a gear wheel at one end of the roller and the pinion g taking the same, and to the shaft of this pinion the crank arm is to be applied as shown by dotted lines. The hopper (6,) may bev provided with a hinged ,cover fr, if desired.
The benefits derived from this arrange .ment and the convenience afforded will be apparent. The ice is crushed and broken without loss, and under circumstances adapted to the use of hotel keepers, in restaurants, &c. i
It will be evident that the grooves in the side d, running vertically, act to crack the ice into small lumps as carried through by the projections on the cylinder or roller a, whereas the ice 'would be ground up and detained in the grooves, at considerable loss, if the grooves in the side d, run parallel to the r'oller ci.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The adjustable side ([grooved vertically as specified in combination with the roller a, to crack and break ice in the manner specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this sixteenth day of Febru ary 1861.
