No. 295,627 2 (Ilaims, (Cl. 206-56) This invention relates to expellant holders for sticks of expendable substance such as lipsticks and other applicative cosmetics.
Most expellant holders for lipsticks and the like cos metics used today comprise at least some parts made from metal even if other parts are made from plastic. However, expellant holders are also known which comprise only all-part plastic parts. Such known holders are either very simple holders only intended for medical lipsticks and the like sticks in connection with which the appearance of the holder is without importance, or demand for their production expensive molds and are difiicult to assemble wherefore their costs of production have been so high that they have found no or only very little use in practice.
An object of the invention is to provide an expellant holder which may be composed by all-plastic parts and nevertheless be given an attractive appearance and be composed of parts which are cheap to manufacture and cheap to assemble.
Another object of the invention is to provide an expellant holder comprising a stick carrier slidably arranged within an inner sleeve and being provided with a side projection extending through a longitudinal slot in the inner sleeve and engaging a screw track formed in the cylindrical inner wall of an outer sleeve rotatably, but not longitudinally displaceable surrounding the inner sleeve by which holder the outer sleeve is retained on the inner sleeve only by means of a retaining ring which from above is pushed down along the outer side of the outer sleeve and is provided with an inwardly extending flange gripping over an outwardly extending flange on the outer sleeve to prevent an axial displacement of the outer sleeve, and which ring is itself secured to the lower end of the inner sleeve.
A further object of the invention is to provide an expellant holder comprising only all-plastic parts each of which may be molded by means of simple molds having no parts which have to be displaced transversely to the longitudinal axis of the mold.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an expellant holder comprising only all-plastic parts without any part having undercut portions such as circumferential inner or outer grooves demanding deformation of another part of the holder during the assembling thereof.
The foreoging and other objects of the invention are referred to in greater length in the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which description reference is made to the accompanying drawings wherein FIG. 1 is 'a longitudinal sectional view of a lipstick holder that incorporates the present improvements, and
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line II-II in FIG. 1.
The lipstick holder shown comprises a lipstick carrier 10, an inner sleeve 12 provided with a base portion 14, an outer sleeve 16, a retaining ring 18 and a slip cap 21).
The carrier 10 consists of a cylinder 22 having a transverse middle wall 24 provided with a center hole 26 serving for airing during the insertion of the lipstick (not shown). To retain the lipstick in the carrier the inner wall of the cylinder 22 is above the middle wall 24 pronited States Patent "ice 3,175,680 Patented Mar. 30, 1965 vided with longitudinally extending ribs 28. On its outer side the cylinder 22 is provided with two cylindrical projeclltions or lugs 30 arranged diametrically opposite each ot er.
The inner sleeve 12 comprises a cylindrical thin-walled portion 32 at its lower end continuing into the somewhat thicker outer wall 34 of the cup-shaped base portion 14. The upper edge of the outer wall 34 constitutes a thrust face surrounding the lower end of the cylinder portion 32. The cylinder portion 32 is provided with two oppositely arranged longitudinal extending slots 38 extending over the whole length of the cylinder portion 32 and being open at the upper end thereof. The lugs 30 on the carrier Iii extend through one each of the two slots 38.
The outer sleeve 16 is provided with a cylindrical wall 42 the inner diameter of which is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the cylinder portion 32 of the inner sleeve 12 and the outer diameter of which wall is somewhat smaller than the outer diameter of the base portion 14. The cylindrical wall 42 is at its lower end provided with an outwardly extending annular supporting flange 44 having an outer diameter slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the base portion 14 and the lower face of which flange 44 faces the thrust face 36. At its upper end the cylindrical wall 42 is formed to provide an inwardly extending flange 47 covering the upper edge of the cylinder portion 32 of the inner sleeve and having an inner diameter at least equal to the inner diameter of the cylinder 22 of the stick carrier 10.
On its inner side the cylindrical wall 42 is provided with two oppositely arranged screw tracks 46 each curving helically along said inner side and each having a pitch corresponding to, but preferably slightly greater than the outer diameter of the outer sleeve and each comprising ring 18 which is provided with a cylindrical Wall 52 adapted to grip closely round the outer side of the base portion 14. At its upper end the wall 52 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 54 arranged just above the upper side of the supporting flange 44 on the outer sleeve 16, but having an inner diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of the cylindrical wall 42 so that it cannot press against this wall. The flange 54 is disposed at a slight distance above the supporting flange 44 so that it cannot press against this flange either. Owing thereto the outer sleeve 16 may be displaced quite a small distance axially relative to the inner sleeve 12, but not more, however, than the outer sleeve may be said to be non-slidably relative to the inner sleeve.
The wall 52 is at its lower end provided with a somewhat thicker outer ring portion 56 extending a small distance below the lower face of the base portion 14. In the recess 53 thus formed there may be arranged a label or the like, for example a plate having at least a portion having the same colour as the lipstick.
The retaining ring 56 has such an inner diameter that the ring may be closely clamped on and thereby secured to the base portion 14. Preferably this may be obtained by shrinking, for example thereby that the inner diameter of the retaining ring 18 is slightly smaller than the outer side diameter of the base portion 14, and the retaining ring being either heated before its application or being made from a softer and more yieldable plastic than the inner sleeve 12.
The slip cap 29 comprises a cylindrical portion 62 provided at the top with an end closure portion 54. The lower end of the cylindrical portion 62 grips round the wall 52 of the retaining ring 18 with a slight clamping effect so that the slip cap 20 is easy to detach and apply, but when applied is held firmly in position.
All the above described parts of the holder may most advantageously be made from plastic by molding, and as appears from the drawing each of said parts has a simple design and consequently requires only a simple rnold in which it is easy to mold and from which it is easy to re move when molded.
Preferably the slip cap 20, the retaining ring 18 and the outer sleeve 16 are on their outer sides provided with a thin metal coating, preferably applied by evaporation of metal in vacuum, which coating is reinforced as to wear with a lacquer coating. The outer sleeve and the slip cap may also as known per so be provided with an outer jacket of metal whereby, however, the manufacturing costs of the holder are essentially increased, but nevertheless are still kept below the manufacturing costs of hitherto known "holders having a similar attractive appearance.
There are possible departures from the exact constructions herein disclosed in which the invention may be embodied and the following claims are directed to and intended to cover all such departures as fairly come within their terms.
