LEE E. MOORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR snot-z.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,562, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filedAngnst 2, xesa. (So model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LEE E. Moose, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of lilas aehusetts,
have inyented'a new and useful Improvement in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a section across the fore part of v1Q my shoe after it has been lasted, the right-hand side showing the outsole in position, and the left'hand side showing the insole, upper, and welt as theyappear after being secured together. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the insole used.
The chief object of my invention is to secure a boot or shoe of superior quality and at less. cost than that at which goods of the same general kind are now produced, I am able to do this by the method of constructionemployed, and more particularly by the use of an insole of the peculiar character'shown. My invention will be readily understood from the following description, in which I use 2 letters of reference to the accompanying drawlugs.
The insole A, shown in cross-section in Fig. 2, and which is necessary forthe construction ofaboot orshoc in the manner herein set forth, is provided at its upper edge with a feather,
a, and at its lower edge with a flange, b, projectingdownward, substantially at rightangles to the body of the sole. lt will be readily seen that in constructing this inner sole the round- 5 ed-out sole-blank is channeled either directly from the edge,(sce right-hand side of Fig. 2,) or on the upper surface some distance in from the edge. (Sceleft-hand side of Fig. 2.) Ailcr channeling the sole-blank the portion outside of or below the channel is turned downward substantially at right angles to the body of the sole, and set; and pressed in that position.
In constructing my shoe the insole is placed on the bottom of the last B, the feather a be ing nextthe last, and the upper and lining 5 are brought over the last, and over the feather,
and placed against the projecting flange b of the insole. A welt-strip is then laid on the outside of the upper, and the whole isthen secured together by a line of stitches, as shown at d, Fig. 1.
In the operation of sewing I prefer to usea wax-thread machine fitted with the work-rest and guide attachment patented to James H. Cutten, as shown and described in Letters 5;, Patent X0. 275,365, dated 10th day of April, 1883 p n l.
After the operation of sewing, the project? ing flange d, as also the projecting edge of the lining and upper, is trimmed andhammered a down, and the filling and outsole are secured in position by a line of stitches (shown at f) passing through the welt and outsolc. The boot or shoe is'then finished in the well-known manner.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming herein the invention shown and claimed in my application No. 139,449, filed simultaneously herewith.
\YhatI claim is-. 7
