APPARATUS FOR STEAMING GRAIN No. 317,461. Patented May 5, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. JUSTUS, or MASSILLON, OHIO.
APPARATUS FOR. STEAMlNG GRAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,461, dated May 5,1885.
Application filed November 15, 1884. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. J mum, of Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Steaming Grain and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto an improvement in apparatus for steaming grain, the object being to provide an apparatus of such construction that it may be arranged between the stockhopper and the grinding-mill and permit the grain to be fed continuously from the stock-hopper through the steaming apparatus to the grinding-mill. \Vith this end in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Arepresents a box or casing made of wood or iron, within which is situated the inclined or tapering conduit B, which may be made of wood or sheet or cast metal and of any desired shape. The conduit 13 is supported at one end on the stationary steam-pipe, and at its opposite end by the bearings I), that are secured to the steam-pipe O. This steampipe extends through the conduit B, and is mounted in the ends of the box or casing. One end of the conduit is open, the edge being inturned, as shown at c. WVithin the open end of the casing projects the lower end of a spout, D, through which grain flows from the stoclrhopper into the conduit, and as the latter is inclined the grain flows downwardly to its lower end and escapes through the holes 6! into the spout c, that leads to the grinding-mill. The larger or lower end of the conduit is provided with a head, E, with which is connected the bevelgear F, the latter being journaled on the steam-pipe. Bevel-pinion G is secured to the shaft H, and meshes with the bevel-gear F. On the shaft H is secured the band-pulley g,- hence by rotating the band-pulley a rotary motion is transmitted to the conduit. Steam-pipe O is provided with perforations f, through which steam is allowed to escape into the charge of grain contained in the conduit. A stop-cock,
m, in the steam-pipe regulates the admission of live steam, and another stop-cock, n, regulates the escape.
Having described the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts of my improvement, I will simply describe its operation.
The casing or box containing the steaming apparatus is located at any convenient point between the stock-hopper and the grindingmill, so that the grain may flow continuously from the stock-hopper into the steaming apparatus, and from thence direct to the mill. As the grain falls into the upper end of the conduit B, itis then subjected to the direct action of steam-jets, which serve to dampen the grain and thus render it fit for the grinding process. The revolving cylinder or conduit acts to feed the grain gradually to the discharge-outlet, where it is received by the spout leading to the grinding-mill. The outer casing or box serves as a jacket to retain the heat within the cylinder, and thus insure a uniform temperature about the same.
It is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention--as, for example, the conduit B, instead of being made flaring or conical, maybe in the form of a true cylinder, or it may be hexagonal or manysided; also, the conduit or cylinder may be supported in any approved manner; hence I do not restrict myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a box or casing and a perforated steam-pipe secured thereto, of a tapering conduit open at one end and closed at the other, and provided with a series of perforations near the closed end, gearin g connected with the conduit for rotating the same, and a spout, the lower end of which passes into the conduit through the open end thereof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. J USTUS.
