(Cl. 26-4) (Granted under Title 35, U.S. Code (1952), see. 266) A non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license in the invention herein described throughout the world for all purposes of the United States Government, with the power to grant sublicenses for such purposes, is hereby granted to the Government of the United States of America.
The patent rights for the United States in any invention in the patent to be granted on this application are dedicated to the public.
This invention relates to a building structure comprising a side wall having a subsiding to which lapped siding boards are attached in a manner whereby the nails securing the siding boards to the subsiding are hidden from view thus avoiding marring the appearance of the siding boards and avoiding problems of painting and other maintenance resulting from exposed nailheads.
In the accompanying drawing FIG. 1 is a three-dimensional view of a cutaway portion of the side wall illustrating the attachment; and
FIG. 2 is a three-dimensional view of a detail.
Referring to the drawing, the subsiding, represented by sheathing 11, is attached to studs 12 and 13 in the conventional manner.
A plurality of horizontally-extending lapped siding boards 14, 15, and 16 are illustrated, each being attached to the sheathing in a similar manner. The attachment for boards 15 and 16 will be described in detail.

illustrated in FIG. 2, is provided with a flat shank 27, a hooked end 28, and an aperture 29 in the shank. The clip is secured to the back side of board 16 by nail 31 driven through aperture 29, the hooked end 28 extending downwardly and projecting into slot 18 of the upper edge 17 of lower board 15 thereby preventing lateral movement of the lower edge of board 16. By securing clip 25 to the back side of board 1 6, the clip is hidden from view. The clip, furthermore, is so positioned on the back side relative to the lower edge of board 16 that when this board is properly positioned on board 15, the lower edge of board 16 overlaps board 15 a distance sufficient to cover nail 19. Nails, two of which are shown at 35 and 36, secure the upper edge of board 16 to the sheathing.
What is claimed is:
A building structure comprising a side wall having a subsiding and a plurality of horizontally-extending lapped siding boards each or" which has a horizontally-extending slot in the upper edge thereof, each siding board being attached at its upper edge to the subsiding with nails, the next higher board lapping over the heads of the nails thus to cover them and being attached at its upper edge to the subsiding, the higher board having clips attached to its back side near its lower edge with the clips projecting into the horizontally-extending slot in the upper edge of the lower board thus to secure the upper board to the subsiding with the clips covered.
