Description
(No Model.)
1). LANE. ROLLER AND BONNET ATTAOHMENTYPOR PLANING MACHINES. No. 317,379.
Pat'ented May 5, 1885.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFI E.
DENNIS LANE, OF MONTPELIEB, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO THE LANE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLLER AND BONNET ATTACHMENT FOR PLANlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,379, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 27, 1885. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS LANE, a citizen of the United States. residing at Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller and Bonnet Attachments for Planing-Machines, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference maked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved roller and bonnet attachment for a traveling'bed planing-machine of the class adapted to plane several narrow boards of uneven thickness at one time.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the annexed drawings, which represent so much of a planing-machine as is necessary to an understanding of my improvements.
Figure 1 is an end view of my improved roller and bonnet attachment for planing-machines, the rotary cutter-head and a portion of the traveling bed being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front 'view of the sectional roller and sectional bonnet with their supporting-framefshowing the manner of mounting the same in the frame of a planing-machine. Fig. 3 represents a side or end view and a rear elevation of one section of my improved roller and bonnet attachment for trav cling-bed planingmachines.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the several views.
The frame A of the planing-machine supports a transverse bar, 13, to which is attached a shaft, 6, on which are closely mounted the pressure-arms C 0, each of which carries a section of the sectional bonnet D, and also one of the yielding rolls forming part of the sec tional roller E, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Each section of the bonnet D is pivoted at c in one end of the roll-carrying arm 0, and is formed with the necessary. curve to overhang the cutter-head, as shown in Fig. 1.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that each pivoted or hinged section of the bonnet D is formed on the cutteuhead side with shoulders d d, that correspond with similar shoulders formed on the supporting-arms O, and so prevents the pivoted shield or bonnet from dropping onto the cutterhead, and yet permits each section to be turned so as to uncover the cutter-head when required, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The forward or feed end of each arm (3 is connected with the bar B byavertical bolt, (2, the upper end of which projects above the bar B, and is surrounded by a spiral spring, f, confined by an adjusting-nut, g, by which the tension of the spring is regulated. v
The operation of my improved sectional pressure roller and sectional bonnet attachment for planing-machines will be readily understood.
It will be observed that by forming the bon net, shield, or'hood D in sections to correspond with the sections of the pressure-roller E, and mounting each section of said bonnet and roller independent of its fellows, the bonnet is made capable of a vertical movement in unison with each section of the yielding pressure-roller, thereby obviating all liability of jar or strain, and facilitating the action of the machine in simultaneouslyplaning a num ber of boards of unequal thickness.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a planing-machine, the combination of the frame A, transverse bar B, shaft 1), pressure-arms O O, mounted on said shaft, the vertical bolts e 6, provided with nuts g, and springs f, whereby the bar B and arms 0 are con nected, the pressure-roller E, formed in sections, each of which is journaled in one 0! said arms, and the bonnet D, also formed in sections, each of which is mounted in one of said arms, substantially as shown and dc scribed.
In testimony whereof I adix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' DENNIS LANE.
