Description
March 16, 1965 W. H. CHAMBERS BLADED IMPLEMENT Filed Dec. 31, 1962 rki INVENTOR.
United States Patent 3,173,206 BLADED llvlPLEMENT William H. Chambers, 1510 Estes Ave., Chicago, Ill. Filed Dec. 31, 1962, Ser. No. 248,739 2 Claims. (Cl. 30169) This invention relates to an improvement in a bladed implement, of the type used advantageously in wallpaper removal operations.
Since the blade of a wallpaper scraping tool must be removed occasionally for sharpening, or replacement, it is important that the tool be arranged so that blade removal, or replacement can be made in a simple manner, and also that proper blade alignment and blade retention be achieved. Accordingly, it is a prime object of this invention to provide a bladed implement wherein a blade can be removed and replaced in a simple manner, and wherein proper blade alignment and blade retention can be effectively realized.
In removing wall paper from a room, it is generally necessary to work in cramped areas, such as in the corners of the room. Hence, it is a further object of the invention to provide a bladed implement which allows convenient and efifective useage in cramped areas, such as in the corners of a room.
Among the other objects of the invention, is the production of a bladed implement which is of simple constructionthe major elements being made of extruded materials-so that manufacturing costs are minimized, and an implement which is of relatively light weight and of sturdy construction.
These and further objects and features of the invention will become more apparent from the following disclosure and accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a full scale plane view of a bladed implement illustrative of an embodiment of the invention; and
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary end view, somewhat enlarged, and generally as seen from line 2-2 in FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, numeral identifies a bladed implement having an elongated handle assembly including a U-shaped handle 12, formed of heavy wire, and a jacket, or sleeve 14, preferably formed of a plastic material, which encloses a major portion of the handle 12, the remaining portion of the implement being a blade holding assembly including plates 16 and 18, a blade 20 operatively supported by the plates, and fastening means, such as screws 22 which removably secure the blade holding assembly to the handle assembly.
The blade holding plates 16 and 18 which are of elongated rectangular shape, are substantially identical except that plate 18 has a blade positioning means in the form of a square-section projection, or rib 24, which extends the length of the plate, in parallel relation to the cutting edge 26 of the blade when the latter is supported by the plates, while plate 16 has a square section recess, or groove 28, which extends the length of the plate, and is adapted to slidingly receive the rib 24. Each plate has a tapered portion 29 making an angle of approximately 14 with the fiat interior surface thereof, which portion 29 is approximately half the width of the plate. The tapered portions 29, allow a prying action of the blade holding assembly so that stilf wallpaper may be lifted from its supporting surface when the cutting edge 26 of the blade is forced thereunder.
The screws 22 pass through the plates 16 and 18, and are in threaded engagement with recessed portions 30 formed at the free ends of the handle 12. As best seen in FIG. 1, the ends of the handle 12 having the recessed portions 30, are bent slightly away from each other, and are of unequal length so that the blade holding assembly is at an angle of approximately 10 from a line normal to the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly. In such manner, the handle portion is maintained in angular spaced relation to the Wall adjacent the hand of the implement user, when scraping wallpaper from a corner of a room.
It will be seen that the blade 20 is supported in operative position by the plates 16 and 18, with the lower edge of the blade in abutment with the rib 24. The operative position of the blade is thus positively maintained. The screws 22 serve the dual purpose of clamping the plates upon the blade 20, and maintaining the blade holding assembly upon the handle 12.
From the foregoing it will be seen that .a blade implement made in accordance with the embodiment above described, will satisfy all of the objectives set forth hereinbefore.
The foregoing description has been given in detail without thought of limitation since the inventive principles involved are capable of assuming other forms without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A hand-held implement for holding a blade which is used to remove wallpaper and the like comprising, in combination: a blade having a cutting edge; a blade holding assembly having two similar plate means, one of which has a recess formed therein and the other of which has an upstanding projection formed thereon which is adapted to interfit with said recess when said blade holding assembly is assembled with said blade therebetween, said blade being abutted against said upstanding projection and maintained in fixed position with respect to said plate means, and outer surface on each of said plate means whch is tapered at an angle of approximately 14 relative to an inner surface thereof, said tapered outer surface providing a prying action of said blade holding assembly so that said blade may be forced under material to be removed and said material removed by prying it from its supporting surface, a handle portion formed of a wire bent into a U-shape with the opposite ends thereof of unequal length so that said blade holding assembly is at an angle of approximately 10 from a line normal to the longitudinal axis of said handle portion, and a plastic sleeve covering a major part of said handle portion.
2. A hand-held implement for holding a blade which is used to remove wallpaper and the like comprising, in combination: a blade having a cutting edge; a blade holding assembly having two similar plate means, one of which has a recess formed therein and the other of which has an upstanding projection formed thereon which is adapted to interfit with said recess when said blade holding assembly is assembled with said blade therebetween, said blade be ing abutted against said upstanding projection and maintained in fixed position with respect to said plate means, an outer surface on each of said plate means which is tapered at an angle of approximately 14 relative to an inner surface thereof, said tapered outer surface providing a prying action of said blade holding assembly so that said blade may be forced under material to be removed and said material removed by prying it from its supporting surface, a handle portion formed of a wire bent into a U-shape with the opposite ends thereof of unequal length so that said blade holding assembly is at an angle of approximately 10 from a line normal to the longitudinal axis of said handle portion, a plastic sleeve covering a major part of said handle portion, and screw means for re movably affixing said blade holding assembly to said handle portion, said screw means passing through both of said plate means and being in threaded engagement with the ends of said U-shaped wire of said handle portion.
