Description

J. MAR
'GUL'IIVA No. 31,725. Patented Mar. 19, 1861.
UNITE STATES PATENT FFIcE.
JOHN MARKEL, oF'MoN-TIon Lo, ILLINOIS.
lMPROVEME NT IN 'CULTIVAT'ORS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,725, dated March 19, 18 61.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MARKEL, ofMon- .ticello, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do here- ;by declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specifieation, and being a perspective view of a cultivator embodying my im- -provement'.' I
My invention consists in a combination of hinged cultivator-frames, connecting-link, ad-' justing-rod, springs, &c., for the purpose of setting the shares to any desired width, and at the same time admitting of their being temgporarily adjusted by hand.
The invention further consists in an arrangement of reversible dished wheels for varying the Width of tread.
A is the frame of the implement, of rectangular form, as shown, and mounted by means 0f pairs of downwardly-projecting brackets 13 B on wheels (3 O. The wheels are considerably dished, and their attachment to the brackets is of such construction as to admitof their being reversed in the bearings when necessary, and thus alter the width of tread to suit the working Width of the cultivator-shovels,
the latter being also adjustable.
' DD E E F F represent, respectively, the beam-handles and shovels of; a pair of cultivators, the whole being looselyshackled to frame A at ,a and hinged at b to an adjustable conneeting-bar, G. A rod, H, passes loosely clear through the-handles, and isprovided with ad- 'connecting' rod G is "adjustablein length, as w stated, to further increase the facility for ad-v justing the workingwidth of the cultivatorshares, being provided with a series of hingeperforations,'g.
The shovels and frames may at any time be raised from the work by means of the treadle, strap, and pulley device J K L, operated by the foot of the driver from seat M. j v I claim herein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- '1. The combination of devices G b Hh Ifor permanently or temporarily adjusting the working width of the cultivator-shovels, constructed, operated, and operating in the manner substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the reversible dished. wheels 0, as fully described,
for the purpose set forth.
7 In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand;
JOHN AR EL; Witnesses:
: J. M. BENDER, E. B. GARVER.
