Description

ATEN'I' CFFIOE.
WILLIAM TAYLOR, OF MANSFIELD MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135336, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TAYLOR, of
Mansfield, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Hoe, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved horse-hoe. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line w 90, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.
Myinvention is an improvement in the class of cultivators for corn, potatoes, and analogous crops, which have hinged adjustable wings or sections; and the improvement consists in the arrangement of means or devices for eft'ecting the adjustment of such sections, as he'reinalter described and'claimed.
A is the beam of my cultivator, to which is attached a bracket, B, provided with perforations to adapt the draft-hook G to be adjusted vertically. D is a gage or colter wheel, journaled in the arms E, by which it may be adjusted up or down. F is a furrowing or opening plow. The hoe-plow G is secured to the beam A just in the rear of the tooth or plow F. To the rear edge of the inclined sides of the hoe-plow G are hinged the forward ends of the wings or plates H, the lower edges of which are concaved to give the desired form. to the hills. To the inner sides of the rear parts of the wings H are pivoted the outer ends of the two bars I, the inner ends of which are pivoted to' a block, J, that slides back and forth'in a longitudinal slot in the rear part of the plow-beam A, so that the wings H may be spread apart or drawn toward each other by adjusting the position of the said block J. To the middle part of the beam Ais attached an inverted T-block, K, to the opposite sides of the upper middle part of which are bolted the for ward ends of the handles L, said sides being beveled to give the proper inclination to said handles. The handles L are connected and held at the proper distance apart by cross-bars or rounds, and are held at the proper elevation by braces M, the lower ends of which are attached to the rear end of the beam A. To one of the rounds of the handles L is pivoted the lever N, the lower end of which is connected with the sliding block J, and-its upper end projects into such a position that it can be conveniently reached and operated by the plowman to expand and contract the wings H. The upper part of the lever N passes through a slot in a plate, 0, attached to the handles L, and in which, along one side of said slot, are formed notches or teeth, to receive a flange formed upon one side of the lever N, to hold said lever securely in any position into which it may be adjusted. The lever N is held against the teeth of the plate 0 by a coiled spring placed upon the round, to which the said lever N is pivoted.
I do not claim adjusting the hinged wings of a plow by means of a vertical pivoted lever and a sliding plate; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The block J, arranged in a longitudinal slot of the beam A, the bars I, connected therewith at the under side andpivoted to the middle portion of the Wings H, the lever N, and plate 0, all as shown and described.
WILLIAM TAYLOR.
Witnesses WM. B. BATES, WM. WALLACE TAYLOR.
