J. N. BOWYER. DRAFT EQUALIZBR..
n PatentedMaJ .dttorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH N. BOWYER, OF ALEXANDER, ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,081, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 14, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. BowYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alex` ander, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specifica-tion, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a detail view in section, and Fig. 4 detail perspective views of the bearingplates. v
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in draftequalizers for treble-trees wherein three horses are pulling abreast, so that all will possess an 4equal leverage; and the object thereofis to improve the construction, whereby a perfect equalization of draft is obtained, a positive action of the mechanism connecting the middle single-tree with the double-tree is assured, and the device as a whole rendered simple and effcctive in its operation. These several objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the double-tree to which the usual single-trees, B,Aare connected, and G the middle singletree. The single-tree C is pivoted in the usual manner to a; curved bar, D, which in turn is connected at its ends to arms a b, through the 4medium of connecting-rods c. The arm a at its rear end terminates in a circular plate, E, which rests upon atlat ring, F, and is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to a circularblock, G, on the upper side of a similar-shaped plate, H, formed upon the extremity of an arm, d.
Fitting over the circular block G is the ring F, which is located between the plates E H, said ring being provided with arms b e, the arm e being somewhat shorter than the arm b, to
correspond in length to the arm d of the plate H. These short arms d e are each connected by rods f to the ends of acurved bar, I, pivoted to the double-tree A. The arm e of the ring F is bent downward below the plane thereof, so as to form a shoulder, g, to serve as a guide for both the ring and plate H, the edge of the plate and shoulder being sufficiently closeV together to prevent any lateral strain on the plate and ring when moving upon each other. 'The arm bis bent upward from the plane of the ring F to form shoulder h, which also forms a guide for the ring and for the ofthe bars, as hereinbefore described, make an y easy operating attachment for the middle single-tree, equalizing and distributing the draft of the team, and in every way providing a` perfect and easily-operating device for the purpose.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a draft-equalizer, the curved bar D, havcombination with the plate H, having thecrcular block G and arm d, the ring F, adapted to iit over the block, and having the arms b 6,.,
and the plate E, having arm a, secured to the block, as shown, said arms being connected to the curved bars by suitable rods, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence y of two witnesses.
JOSEPH N. BOWYER.
Witnesses:
