Be it known that I, CALEB H. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the countypof Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Dredge- Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear,`
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l represents a sectional view of the end of a suction-pipe with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to attachments for dredge-pumps, the object of said attachment being to provide a means for stirring or cutting up the mud, clay, sand, or other material preparatory to its being pumped and of utilizing the force of the iiow in the suction to operate a suitable cutter; and my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of devices, all of which I shall hereinafter fully set forth 'and claim.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casting in the form of an elbow, and which is attached to the end of aiexible suction-pipe, a, in the usual manner.
Within a step, b, formed on the inside of the casting A is suitably journaled the upper end of a vertical shaft, C, its lower end being supported in a plate, d, whichV may be bolted or otherwise firmly secured to the lower end of the casting.
Upon the shaft C, near its lower end, is placedv a screw-propeller with two or more blades or fans, e, for the' purpose of giving a revolving motion to the cutters.
Beneath the plate d, which supports the lower end of the shaft G, is another plate, D, which is keyed or otherwise secured, so that it may have a movement similar to the rotation of the shaft, and upon this plate D is a series of blades/or cutters, E, having their cutting-points arranged in a manner substantially as shown in Fig. 3. These cutters may be secured to the plate by any well-known means; vbut I prefer the construction shown,
in which the threaded reduced ends of the cutters enter perforations in the plate, to
which they are firmly secured by nuts. These cutters, as before stated, are for the purpose of cutting and stirring up the loose dirt prior to its entering the suction-pipe, and prevent its clogging the same. Secured in the upper and outer end of the casting A is an eyebolt, g, for engaging a chain or other mechanism to lower or raise the suction-pipe.
From the foregoing description it is evident that as soon as the pump (not shown) is startedpthe flow of the current in the suctionpipe acting'upon the blades of the propeller causes it to revolve, and with it the cross-` plate D withits cutters, which so effectually cut and stir up the material to be pumped that it iows easily through the suction-pipe and into a suitable pump, from whence it may be discharged by any well-known means.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by or cutters, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

plate, D, with blades or cutters secured in the I perforations, and a means, as set forth, for raisj ing orlowering the end of the suction-pipe, substantially as herein described.
