COMBINED OPEN G RATE AND HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,006, dated May 5, 1885.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. PATTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Open Grate and Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.
The nature of this invention is a combined open grate and heater adapted to be applied in connection with the ordinary fire or chimney places, and its object is to utilize a portion of the heat (which in ordinary open grates usually escapes up the chimney) for heating air or water for warming an upper room. I accomplish this result by combining with an open grate an arrangement of hot-air fines or chambers, such as I shall now proceed to describe, reference being had to the annexed drawings, of which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention in position in a chimney-place; Fig. 2, a top view of the same when detached; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view thereof, as on the line a a, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the adjacent arrow on the right; Fig. 4, a similar sectional view as on line I) b,.1ooking in the direction of the arrow on the left; Fig. 5, a horizontal sectional view on line 0 c,- Fig. 6, a

A is the open grate, contained in an alcove in the front of the air-box B, which box is formed so as to fit or may be readily fitted into an ordinary fire or chimney place. The rear wall or partition of said alcove has extending across the same an angular projecting partition, C, extending over and above the back part of the coal-space of the grate, the function of which is to deflect the flame outwardly, and also to present an increased and efficient heating-surface for the air that, as will be explained further on, circulates immediately back of and in contact with said partition, and which constitutes a large portion of the front of the main air-chamber D, separated from flue G by partition The smoke and other products of combustion from the coals E pass up the chimney J, Fig. 1, of the building byway of the short flue F connecting therewith.
At one side of the box B-the left side in the present instance-is a vertical chamber, G, whose side It forms one of the lateral walls of the aforesaid alcove. On the other or right side is a large chamber or air-space, D, extending also back of the rear partition of the alcove. This chamber extends around and is separated from the flue G by a partition, k, communicating by an opening, Z, with the flue N, Fig. 1, leading up to the apartment to be heated; It is preferred to carry this hot-air flue N up the chimney, in order tosecure the advantage of the heat escaping up the latter. The chambersD and G communicate by means of the horizontal air-conduit I, whose bottom wall is the top partition of said alcove, and whose rear wall is the front of the short smokeflue F. By the described construction it will be perceived that a large heating-surface for the air within the said chamber is obtained.
The cold air enters the spaces D and G through registers R at the base, opening into the room; or, by a suitable connection, the air may be taken from out of doors, if preferred. The body of air entering chamber G comes into contact with the partition h, by which it is heated to some extent, then ascends and passes on through the conduit I, by whose bottom and rear walls it is further heated, and mingles with the air in chamber D, which has entered the latter through the register at its base. The latter body of air is heated by the side wall of the alcove, and the combined currents circulate around back of the latter and the flue F, coming into contact also with the highlywater in lieu of air for a like purpose, I sim-.

Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with an open grate, of
the air-chambers G D, provided with bottom I 5 openings for the admission of air, of the horizontal box-chamber I, connecting said cham' bers G D, the grate-fiue F, interposed between the chambers G I D, and the side outlet-opening Z,-substantially as described, and for the 20 purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the open grate, the vertical side air-fiue,G, the side and rear flue or chamber, D, said flues communicating by means of the horizontal fine I, and provided with the openings or registers R, all construct- 2 ed, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as described.
3. In combination with an open grate, the chambers G and D, separated on one side by partition k, and connected by the horizontal o chamber I, the chamber D being provided with a 10W partition, m, substantially as de scribed, and for the purposes set forth.
