INVENTOR. EPA NA J. WEHR/NGER ATTORNEY United States Patent Office 3,169,745 FGLD AWAY DESIGN MASTER Frank J. Wehringer, 217 E. Adele, Anaheim, Calif. Filed Aug. 12, 1963, Ser. No. 301,363 3' Claims. (Cl. 248-454) support of the board directly from the floor, and for its adjustment to diflerent angular positions.
j which comprises sturdy legs and has framing for rigid It is clear thatsuch large boards are complete pieces of drafting room furniture which cannot be readily moved or put out of the way, and that the} earlier mentioned small'boards described above are of such nature that they are not suitable for large drawings and more permanent use because of thelack of rigidity, theirlack of suitability for drafting machine or straight edge, and because they are not equipped or table. I
Accordingly it isan object of this invention to provide a drafting board having collapsiblesupporting means so that the drafting board may be properly supported on a to lie in position but fiat upon a desk table or desk when in use.
Itis another object ofthis-invention to design supporting means for a drafting board of such character that the supporting-means may be} portation' and;storage of the drafting board.
It is another object of this-inventionto provide a-draft ing boardof such size andstability as to be suitable for use with; drafting machines'and permanently installed:
folded for convenient trans straight edges and for thedrafting'of drawings of sub-" Q stantial size, and at the same tirneto provide collapsible supporL'ng means for the drafting board which when supporting the board provide rigid support, but arranged for easy collapsibility of .;the support for proper storage.
it is an object of this invention toproyide' an economic and troubleefree drafting board supp'orting structure which can be collapsed' for' easy trahsportationend storagej'of the drafting board-" Other objects and-advantagesbf thisinventionwiH beattached drawings in whicli z 3 Master collapsibledrafting-board or" thi's'in'ven'tionj I come apparent'upon study of the "specificatiori,"andlthe FIG. 2 is a rear elevationalview of the drafting board showing the supporting structure thereofinposition for support; a

FIG. '6 is another elevation of the hinge of FIG'f l taken along the line 66 of FIG. 5; and FIG. 7 is FIG. 4. p In summary, this invention is directed to a drafting board having at least two "support panels which arehinged a detail'of the pivot portion of the ends of L on special-hinges. These special hinges have stops which limit the opening of the hinge to and a spring to urge the hinge open to the aforementioned stops. .Each of the support panels is mounted on at least two hinges so the support panels may be so opened to substantially 90 with respect to the, back of the board, at which point the stops are engaged. 'The support panel hinges contain springs which urge the support panels toward the closed position parallel with the back of the board. Mounted upon each of the support panels by hinges securing it thereto is a stop. Each of these stops is of such configuration as to be behind the support panel when it is closed, and to hold the support panel out against the support panel hinge stops when the support panel is opened andthe stop is in place. The special hinges supporting the stop structure upon the support panel are spring urged toward the open position and have a stop which limits opening to 90. Accordingly, when folded, the stops' and support panels occupy a minimum of space and when swung into operative positlon they rigidly support the drafting board.
Further in more detailed understanding this inventionwill be obtained by a study of the following portion of edge. 18 is furnished with an upstanding projection 20.
portionof its lengthfto serve as a holder for pencils and other drafting equipment at throughout a substantial aconven'ie'nt position close to the draftsman. Alter natively t'o the;projection 20, a groove can be formed n the straight edge 18 for the reception of such drafting implements. The straight edge 18 is maintained.
in position by' suitable Ico'rds Io r wires 22 which pass around pulleys 24 mounted on the corners .of the board. The threading of the cord or wire "22arourid: the pulleys 24 such; that :When clips 26, attached to the straight edge 18, are secured to the appropriate strands of the .cordflorlwirefZ'Z, the straight edge removes up and u down the board parallelio"its prior position. A spring. 28 in the cord or wire 22 maintains tension thereinl 'l The back of the draftingboard top 12 is indicated at 3.0.and itis to this back'that the supporting structure of 'thisinven'tion is secured for holding the 5 board in a proper drafting, position. The supporting structure corri' prisesapair of support 7 v 32 is. adjacent the. back seer thefdrafting board 1 6.
' The two remaining edges 36 and38' are preferably of different dir'nensions so that the triangle is.not an isosceles triangle with itsaba'se toward 'the'flb ottom 30 of "the board. ,.As shown, theed'ge'36 islonger thanjthe fedge of 38"and1thusthe edges 36 and 38 form diife'rent' angles with respect to the drafting board 16. "Accordingly .the raftingl board; '16 st'andsfat different angles when it is resting on the.edgejiidjas compared,to when it is rest ingon' the short edge 3 8 of the support panels 3 2 A c cordingly'two different angles of the board with respect -to the horizontal are. available by thismeans. I
In order to maintain convenience of storage ofthe Fold-awayDesign Master, the support panels-32 are arranged so that they may be folded adjacent the back 30 of the drafting board 16. Blocks 40 are secured to the back 30, and carry hinges 42 ofispecial design.
These hinges are. of such construction and such con figurationthat they have an inbuilt stop which pre-Q u D I panels 32 of generally-triangular j config'u ration.- Thelongestedge 3415f the'support panel
