assignors to Stedman Manufacturing Company, Ashehoro, N.C., a corporation of North Carolina.
Filed Mar. 21, 1961, Ser. No. 97,986 1 Claim. ((31. 2-224) This invention relates to mens wearing apparel and more particularly to a mans undergarment or brief as described in application Serial No. 25,433 and now abandoned, filed by us on April 28, 1960, entitled Mens Wearing Apparel and of which this present application is a continuation-impart.
It is desirable in men s briefs that the brief give a trim 3,156,754 Patented Jan. 26, 1965 l-Ce.
- seams 3 and 4. The upper edges of parts 1 and 2 in turn and neat fit while at the same time ofiering gentle and substantial support to, the wearer. that the brief be so constructed as to eliminate any tug in the waistline when the wearer moves. We propose a novel undergarment which achieves the above advantages and which at the same time may be economically Further it is desirable made from knitted or other materials which are'readi'ly I available on the market.
Broadly, a brief constructed according to our invention comprises a front part, a back part, and a pouch part.
The front and back parts are stitched together along vertically extending sides andhave an elastic waistband sewn along their top edges to form a waist opening. The pouch part is sewn along one edge to the front part and is joined to the back part by a separate expansion gusset piece in order to form a crotch portion. Leg bindings are sewn to the lower'edges'of the front and back parts to a leg opening. A second non-elastic or non-extensible tape is partially sewn to the front part and alongan edge of the pouch part so that it extends in an opposite diagonal direction to the first tape crossing with the first tape and so that it joins the elastic waistband with the other leg opening. sewn to the front part below where the two tapes cross in order to form the fly opening.
The second tape, however, is not Y The pouch part itself may be lined with a soft knitted gether in order to prevent unravelling Referring to the drawings in which a preferred em-bodiment of our invention is shown, I
' FIG. 1 is a front view of a pair of mens briefs constructed according to our invention;
FIG. 2 is a view of the brief of FIG. 1 turned inside out and illustrating in particular the backside of the'front part of the brief shown in FIG. 1;
' FIG. 3 is a View of FIG. 1 taken along lines 3-3;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view of FIG. 1 taken along lines 4-4;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view of FIG. 3 taken along lines 55; and
FIG. 6 is a front view similar to FIG. 1 of a different embodiment of our invention.
Referring to FIG. 1 in greater detail, 1 illustrates a front part of a mans brief while 2 represents a back part which is joined to the front part by vertically extending Where the rubberized fabric construction is used, we find itadvisable to stitch the rubberized fabric and gusset to a separating tape rather than directly toare joined by an elastic waistband 5.
The lower portions of parts 1 and 2 have leg bindings 6 and 7 sewn thereon which'define two leg openings.
Bindings 6 and 7 may be made either of an elastic or nonelastic material.
A first 'non-elastic or non-extensiblev tape 8 is sewn onto the front part 1 and along an edge of a pouch part 12 so that it extends from the elastic waistband 5 to the binding 7. A second non-elastic or non-extensible tape 9 is sewn along a portion 'of its length to the fnont part 1 and to the pouch part 12 as shownv more clearly in FIG. '2. That part of tape 9 below where it crosses with tape 8 and wher it is not sewn to the front part defines with the pouch part 12 and front part 1 a fly opening it).
Part 1 is cut along an arcuate line 11, as shown in FIG. 2, so that the pouch forms an overlap at the fly opening. The pouch may be lined with a second layer of soft material 13 which may be of different texture than the material comprising the front and back parts. The
construction of the pouch as shown provides a substantial and gentlesupport for the wearer.
In addition to the novel pouch construction shown, we
provide also for an expansion gusset 14, asfshown in FIG; 3, to be includedin the crotch portion between the leg openings of the brief. The expansion gusset 14 is made of a knitted ribbed cotton material which is stretchable laterally of the leg openings. The gusset as shown tends to eliminate any tug of the waistline of the wearer when the wearer turns. v
Reference is now made to FIG. 6 in which a different embodiment of our invention is shown. lnthis form of the invention, the pouch part 12' comprises a single layer of a rubberized elastic material which gives an additional It has been found that to keep support to the wearer. the rubberized material from unravelling, it is important that the pouch not be sewn directly onto the expansible gusset 14. Rather the pouch and gusset should both be sewn'onto a tape 15 of the same material as that of tapes Sand 9.
before it is joined to the front part.
initially cut so that there are two diverging legs forming a V-shaped notch. These legs are then sewn together along their adjacent edges to form a seam 16 which will then give the pouch a bowed-out shape. The pouch is then-turned inside out so that the rough side of the seam is outside the brief. A A
Preferably the material comprising the front and back parts is a knitted material although other material could be used.
It is to be understood that changes in the described structure may be made without departing from the spirit "of the invention which scope is to be determined by reference to the following claim.
We claim: I
A mans undergarment comprising a" front part and a back part, a pouch part of rubberized, expansible fabric having a .V-shaped notch at its lower portion joined t0- gether along the edges of said notch to give a pre-formed bowed shape, an elastic waistbandjoined to the top edges of said front and back parts to form a waist opening, two leg bindings secured to the. edges of 'said front and back parts and lower side edges of said pouch part to form two leg openings, a first non-elastic tape joined onto said front part and along an upper'edge of said pouch part extending diagonally from said waistband to a leg opening, a second non-elastic tape extending diagonally T 5 g from said Waistband to the other of said leg openings and crossing With said first non-elastic tape substantially in the center of said front part, said second non-elastic tape being joined along a portion of its length to said front part and along therernaining portion of its length to an upper edge of said pouch part with the portion joined to References flied in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Clarke Nov.
