WINDLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,602, dated April. 28, 1885.
Application filed September 25, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RODNEY F. CARTER, of South Ryegate, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Windlasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved windlass to be used in the hoisting of stone in quarries and for a variety of other purposes; and it consists in certain details of construction of the Windlass, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure I is a partly sectional front view of the Windlass; Fig. II, an exterior end view of the same, and Fig. III a plan of the invention with a portion thereof removed.
A is the platform of the Windlass, formed of the timbers a, framed together in any suitable manner.
B is a frame fastened to the platform A, supporting the cross-piece U.
D is a revoluble shaft resting in suitable bearing-boxes, b and c, the former on the crosspiece 0 and the latter on the platform A.
E is a head securedto the upper end of the shaft D, to which is fastened a pole, F, adapted for the attachment thereto of a horse, as shown in Fig. I.
G is a differential drum, the larger and smaller sections of which are denoted, respectively, byd and c. This drum is placed loosely on the shaft D, and its lower head, which is protected by a flange, f, rests on the bearingbox 0 on the platform A. Theupper head of the drum is provided with a central plate, h, having inclined teeth thereon, and the shaft D with a clutch, H, having similar teeth, adapted to engage with those on the plate h.
A feather, 2', serves to communicate the rotary motion of the shaft to the clutch, and admits of the latter device being moved longi tudinally of the shaft. The clutch is thrown in and out of gear with the toothed plate It by means of a lever, Z, connected by means of pins m to a band, a, which surrounds the clutch. The clutch H may be held in an elevated position by a rod, 0, which is hooked over the end of the lever Z, as shown in Fig. I.
The other end of the friction-baud is connected to a lever, J, by means of which it may be tightened on the drum, so as to prevent its being turned.
K is a spiral flange on the upper end of the section d of the drum G, to guide the hoistingrope, (not shown,) which is fastened to it, from one section of the drum to the other.
In loadingv a truck with stone-one of the many uses to which my Windlass may be appliedthe operation is as follows: The shaft being in revolution, with the windingrope extending through suitable snatch and other blocks to the hoisting-sheaves and made fast to the stone to be raised to a truck, the clutch is thrown in, which causes the rope to be wound on the larger section of the drum. This winding is continued until all the slack is taken up, when the rope is guided by hand to the spiral flange, and thence automatically to the smaller section of the drum. By this transfer the leverage is greatly increased and the stone elevated without difficulty.
When it is desired to lower the stone to the truck, the brake is first applied and then the clutch thrown out. The brake is then slackened until the stone causes the drum to revolve. The rate of speed of descent is governed by the power applied to the lever J.
I claim as my invention In a Windlass, a frame-work and a revoluble shaft supported therein with means to turn it, combined with a differential drum on the said shaft, adapted to be turned independently of the shaft, having at its upper end atoothed plate, a clutch fitted to engage with the said toothed plate, and a spiral flange between the larger and smaller sections of the drum, substantiall y as and for the purpose specified.
RODNEY F. CARTER.
