Description

(NoM0de1.)- J. D JOHNSON & W.- H. LONG.
v STEAM COOKING-APPARATUS." No. 316,549. Patented Apr; 28, 1885.
VQEWCQJMM. KMNWS? Q/i n 2 Y UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. JOHNSON AND \VILLIAM H. LONG, OF NEWTON, IOVTA.
STEAM cooKme APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,549, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed January 2, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JoHN D. JoHNsoN and WILLIAM H. LONG, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the town of Newton, in the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Steam Cooking Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of cooking devices that are adapted to be placed upon a stove to cook different kinds of food separatelyat the same time by means of steam generated in the bottom; and our object is to improve the construction, convenience, and efficiency of such an apparatus.
Ou'r improvement consists in the construction and combination of aflat-bottomed boiler, a vertical steam conducting tube provided with concentric revolving valves and braced with a vertical post and a horizontal handle, a series of cylindrical vessels having circular beads in their closedbottoms and hasps adapted to hinge them to the vertical steam-conducting tube, and detachable covers having central openings and circular grooves adapted to receive the circular beads on the bottoms of the vessels, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings isa side view of our complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section. Jointly considered they clearly illustrate the construction, operation, and utility of our complete invention.
A represents a flat-bottomed circular boiler, made of sheet metal. It may vary in size as desired.
B is a feed-cup, fixed against the outside of the boiler in such a manner that Water poured in the open top of the cup will enter the boiler through a series of perforations in the boiler at the bottom of the cup.
O is a steam-conducting tube fixed on the top at one side of the boiler.
dis a tubular post fixed to the opposite side of the boiler and rigidly connected at its top end with the top portion of the tube 0 by means of a horizontal extension and handle, f, to brace the steam-conducting tube to which the cooking-vessels are hinged. The top of the boiler has a circular opening and a groove, 9, in concentric position with the opening.
Nos. 1 2 3 are open-topped vessels, of uni with the tube 0 by means of metal straps or hasps h, and semicircular extensions i, made by bending a flat piece of sheet metal to fit against the tube 0, and fixing them at their edges and centers against the sides of the vessels, as shown in Fig. 3. Each vessel has a circular bead, k, on its bottom, so that they can be interchangeably placed upon the top of the boiler to form form size and shape, detachably connected a close joint therewith by allowing the bead' k to enter the groove 9, and also interchangeably connected with each other in the same manner by means of detachable covers m, that have circular openings in their centers, and grooves g concentric therewith corresponding with the groove in the fixed top of the boiler. Each vessel is also provided with a steam-port, n, that extends through its side near its bottom and through the extension i in such a manner that when such steam-port coincides with a corresponding port, n, in the tube Osteam will pass from the boiler and through the tube into the vessel.
01/ are open-ended tube sections and valves fitted in the tube 0 and provided with handles n, that extend through slots in the tube in such a manner that they can be revolved in the tube to cut off. the steam from the vesi" sels. Each tube-section n has a port coinciding in point of elevation with the ports a in the tube 0, so that the tube-section need only .be turned right and left alternately to open and close the ports a and n.
T represents a perforated removable bottom placed in one of the vessels to support corn, potatoes, meat, or other articles that may be placed therein to be cooked by steam admitted into the vessel through its port a.
Anything that is to be baked and kept from the direct contact of steam may be placed in a closed tin box or can, and the can then placed upon the perforated support 1', so that the steam can envelop it.
s represents a cover adapted to cover any one of the vessels Nos. 1, 2, and 3 that may be uppermost.
By simply pressing against the side of a vessel thus combined with the steam-conveying tube and boiler the vessel will slide laterally, and in so doing automatically close its steamport a, and prevent the annoyances and dangers incident to examining or removing the g contentsof the v'esselwhen its steam-induction on its .outside,- and a, steam-conveying tube port has not been first/closed by operating the valve or cut-off in the steam-conveying tube. The openings in the detachable covers m allow the contents of each vessel to be examined without removing the cover or unhinging or removing either one of the vessels. We claim as our invention 1. ha steam cooking apparatus, -the-combination of a series of interchangeable opentopped vessels having circular beads on the undersides of their closed bottoms and steamports at their sides with a boiler having an open-top and a circular groove adapted toreceive the circular beads on the vessels, and a steam-conveying tube having valvescoin- *cidi'ng with the. ports intlie vessels, and detachable vessel-covers having central openings and .oircula'r grooves corresponding with the circular groove in the top 'of the boiler, for the purposes stated.
2. The" combination of a vessel provided with portvn, the tube 0, having a correspond- 'ing port, it, the steam-valve n, provided with a handle that extends through a slot in the tube C, the extension 1', and the strap or hasp 7:, all arranged substantially as specified.
3; The improved cooking apparatus composed of the following elements, to wit: a boiler having an opening in its top and a circular groove around the opening, a feed-cup fixedon the top and side of thckboiler and braced by a post fixed to the opposite side of the boiler and extended horizontally to the top portion of the tube, a series of interchangeable, .open topped vessels having circular beads on their bottoms to fit into the circular groove in the top of the boiler, and semicirand steam-ports to coincide with valves in the tube, and .detachable vessel-covers having central openings and circular grooves around the openings, to operate in the manner set forth.
4. The combination of the boiler Afllavihg a feed-cup, B, and a circular groove around an opening in its top, the tube 0, having 'a bracing-post and handles d f, and valves n" M, the open-topped vessels-Nos. '1 2 3, having 1 circular beads g on their bottoms, semicircular extensions 43, steam-ports n n, and has'ps h, and
detachable covers m, having central openings and circular grooves, k, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
