(Cl. 248224) This invention generally relates to decorative window shutters or blinds and more particularly to improved shutters and hardware for detachably mounting the same to a building at the sides of the windows. ,7 .One of the objects of the present invention is to provide improved shutters and mounting hardwaretherefor wherein the shutters may be easily and quickly-mounted to and removed from a buildingxand which when mounted on the building will be securely retained inposition wherethey will substantially conceal the mounting hardware andwill accommodate the circulation" of air between the shutter and the building. I

A further object of the present invention is to provide improved shutters, and mounting hardware therefor wherein the shutters may be readily adjusted to position the same in a vertical plane or parallel to the wall on which they are mounted as well as to position the same in parallel relationship to the vertical portion of the window frame.

A still further object. of the present invention is to provide improved shutters and mounting hardware therefor which will obtain the above objects in structures which may 'be economically manufactured with the inclusion of conventional shutter designs and which will experience along and useful life. Included in this objectis the provision of such improved mounting hardware which may be quickly and easily applied to the house and shutters and which may be used in connection with shutters of various dimensions and designs while at the same time being comprised of a minimum of parts possessing a relatively lightweight and compact construction.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.

. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereafter set forth and the scope of the application which will be indicated in the appended claims.

Referring to FIGS. 2 and 5, the hook member 10 is formed from a suitable metal such as sheet steel and comprises an elongated flat base 18 and a pair of spaced tongues 20 offset from the base 18 at the ends thereof by stepped, portions '19 and extending away from the base 18 at an angle with respect thereto. In the shown embodiment, the hook member 10 is adapted to be suitably fixed to the rear surface 9 of the shutter at the top por-' tion thereof and in centered position with respect to the transverse dimension of the shutter 8, through any suitable means such as the screws 22 employed in the illustrated embodiment which extend through the base 18 i of the hook member-and into the shutter;

Refer-ring totFIG. 3', the eye member 12 is formed from a suitable metal such as sheet steel and-comprises an elongated base 24 and a pair of spaced ledge, portions 26 projecting laterally from the base at the ends thereof and preferably at an angle with respect thereto. The ledge portions 26 are provided with a pair of generally rectangular slots 28 for receiving the tongues 20 of the hook member 10. In the shown embodiment, the eye member 12 is adapted to be fixed to the wall 40f the house at a desired distance away from the window frame, by any suitable means such as the screws 30 which extend through the base 24 of the bracket and into the wall of the house. j v

' Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6, the side edges 21, 23 of the tongues 20 of the hook member 10 converge toward each other at the free end thereof and the inner edges 21 are spaced such that when the tongues 20 are inserted in the slots 28 of the eye member 12, the tongue edges 21 will engage the inner ends 29, of the slots 28 while the opposite tongue edges 23 will be spacedfrom the opposite ends 31 of the slots 28. In this manner the shutter 8 may be adjusted to lie, for example, in parallel relationship withthe frame of the window by rocking or rotating the shutter 8 about the inner ends 29 of the slots 28, the taper of the tongue edges 21, 23 being such as to accommodate the rocking action while still providing engagement between the tongues and the inner ends 29 of the slots necessary for the proper suspension of the shutter.

Although it is desirable that the tongues 20 of the hook member 10 be spaced sufiiciently close to each other-so as to provide an ample range of rocking adjustment, it is also desirable that the tongues 20 be spaced sufficiently apart from each other so as to ensure that the shutter 8 will be held to the wall with sufficient rigidity. From. these standpoints, a spacing of six inches between the tongues 20 of the hook member has been found in practice to provide good results. a V

In order to maintain the tongues 20 of the hook member 10 in fixed position in the slots 28 of the eye member to prevent rattling, and the like, of the shutter 8, in the preferred embodiment, portions of the eye member 12 at the edges of the slots 28 are bent downwardly to form tabs 13 which are adapted to engage the outer faces of the tongues 20 as shown in FIG. 4 when the bottom of the shutter 8 is anchored to the bracket. In this manner the tongues '20 are cramped between the tabs 13 and the side edges 33 of the slots 28 which respectively engage a the opposite faces of the tongues 20 to slightly deflect the latter in a clockwise direction (as viewed in the adapted to be fixed to the wall 4 of the house generally at v the bottom portion of the shutter and in vertical alignment with the eye member 12 by any suitable means such as the screw 36. The bracket member 14 further includes a laterally extending arm 38 extending generally normal to the base 34 and adapted to underlie the bottom surface 11 of the shutter 8. The arm 38 of the bracket 14 is provided with an elongated opening 40 extending generally normal to the base 34 of. the bracket and terminating at one end 41, in the outer edge 39 of the arm 38 as best shown in FIG. ,3. t

The screw. 16', which is fastened to the shutter 8 at about the mid-point of the bottom surface 11 thereof, is adapted to be inserted in the opening 4b of thebracket. The shank 17 of the screw is dimensioned so that it may slide in the opening 40 longitudinally thereof so as topermit the shutter 8 to be adjusted toward or away from the wall 4 of the house as well as to "permit the screw to be .passed into and out of the opening 4t through I the end portion 41 thereof.

A means for releasably anchoring the bottom portion of the shutter 8 to the bracket 14 in various adjusted positions of'the shutter is provided which in the shown embodiment comprises a sleeve 44 press-fitted orintegrally formed on the shank 17 of the screw; and a plurality of spaced cutout portions or notches 43 formed in the bracket arm 38' along the opposite side edges of the opening 40 and defining various adjusted positions for the bottom of the shutter 8. The diameter ofthe sleeve 44 is dimensioned to be received in the cutout portions 43 and to be engageable with the side edges thereof so as to prevent movement of the shutter 8 out of its adjusted position. 10, 12 andthe bracket and: screw members 14,16 are fixed to shutter 8 and wall 4 of the house as described above, mounting of the shutter 8 to the wall 4 of the house is easily effected by first inserting the tongues 20 of the hook member in the slots 28 of the eye member and then adjusting the shutter 8 so as to lie parallel to the window frame, by rotating or rocking the shutter about the inner ends 29 of the eye member slots 28.

- The shutter 8 is then swung towards the house wall 4 and the anchor screw- 16 horizontally inserted in the bracket opening 40 through the end portion 41. thereof which causes the tongues of the hook member 10 to be cramped by the tabs 13 and the side edges of the eye member slots 28 as described above. The shutter is then slightlyswung or pivoted about the tongue-in-slot connection and into the desired plane which is generally a vertical plane or a plane parallel to the wall of the house.

Detachment of the shutter 8 from the house wall 4 is simply and quickly accomplished by unscrewing the anchor screw 16 until the shank 17 thereof lies in the opening 40 of the bracket 14; swinging the'shutter in a clockwise direction (as viewed in FIG. 4) until the. screw 16 is removed from bracket opening 40; and then raising the shutter 8 until the tongues-of the hook member 10 are removed from the eye member slots 28.

As will be apparent to persons skilled in the art, various modifications andadaptations ofthe structure above described will become readily apparent without departure from the spirit and scopeof the-invention, the scope of l which is defined in theappended'claims.

In combination with a shutter and a wall of a building having mounting surfaces in facingrelationship with each other and positioned generally at the top offthe shutter, an assembly for detachably mounting the shutter to the wallcomprising a hook. member fixed to one of said mounting surfaces, a hook-receiving member fixed to the other mounting surface and having meansfor removably receiving the hook member for hanging the shutter to the wall, a bracket having a first portion fixed to the wall'generally adjacent the bottom ;of the shutter andjhavinga second portion projecting outwardly from the wall and underlying the'bottomsurface of the shutter,

said projecting portion of the bracket having an elongated opening extending generally normalitothe wall, and means for securing the bottom of the shutter'to the bracket in selected spaced positions; from the wall including means fixed to the shutter dimensioned to extend through the opening and to move longitudinally therein for permitting the shutter-to 'be'adjusted towards or away from the wall.

The combination as defined in claim 1 wherein said means for securing the bottom of the shutter to the bracket includes a plurality ofnotches provided along the edges of said opening and a fastener adjustably received in the shutter and having an enlarged portion dimensioned to be received in thefnotches for retainingthe shutter in ad justed position. 5. The combination asdefined in claim 4 wherein said tongue portions of the hook member have edges facing each other and spaced such that said edges are engageable respectively with the ends of the slots, and said edges are inclined so as to be engageable with'said ends of the slots at selected points along said edges to permit'the shutter to be rocked for adjustment.

6. The combination as defined in claim 5 wherein said eye member has means engageable with said tongues respectively when the'tongues are inserted in said slots and the said fastener means is secured to the bracket for preventing movement of the shutter relative to the wall.

, 7. An assembly for detachably mounting a shutter member to the wall member of a building or the like comprising a hook member and a hook-receiving member, said hook-receiving member having means for removably receiving the hook member for hanging the shutter memberattached thereto, fastening means adapted to be fixed to the shutter member at the bottom thereof and dimensioned to be slidably received in said opening, and means on the fastener means and the bracket for releasably securing the fastener meansin position in the opening to thereby anchor the bottom of the shutter member with respect to the wall member.

8. The assembly as defined in claim 7 wherein said last mentioned means include a portion on the fastener means having an enlarged dimension and a plurality of notches in the edges of said opening dimensioned to receive said enlarged portion of the fastener means.

9. An assembly for hanging a frame to a wall wherein the frame and the wall have mutually facing mounting surfaces, including an eye member adapted to be fixed to one of the mounting surfaces and having a pair of spaced ledge portions positioned to project outwardly from said one surface towards the other surface, said ledge portions each having a slot therethrough, a hook member adapted to be fixed to the other mounting surface and having a pair of spaced and olfset tongues dimensioned to be re- 6 spectively received in said slots of the eye member, said tongues having side edges spaced to be engageable respectively with the ends of the slots, said edges being inclined so as to be engageable with said ends of the slots at selected points along said edges to permit the frame to be tilted relative to the wall for adjustment.

10. The assembly as defined in claim 9 including means for supporting the bottom of the frame in spaced relationship from the wall.

11. The assembly defined in claim 10 wherein said eye member has a pair of spaced tab portions engageable with said tongues respectively when the tongues are received in said slots of the eye member for limiting movement of the frame relative to the wall.

12. The assembly defined in claim 11 further including means for releasably anchoring the bottom of the frame to the wall and wherein said tongues extend at an angle such as to be deflected towards said other surface by the tab portions when the bottom portion of the frame is anchored to the wall of the house.

Claims

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A SHUTTER AND A WALL OF A BUILDING HAVING MOUNTING SURFACES IN FACING RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH OTHER AND POSITIONED GENERALLY AT THE TOP OF THE SHUTTER, AN ASSEMBLY FOR DETACHABLY MOUNTING THE SHUTTER TO THE WALL COMPRISING A HOOK MEMBER FIXED TO ONE OF SAID MOUNTIONG SURFACES, A HOOK-RECEIVING MEMBER FIXED TO THE OTHER MANTAINING SURFACE AND HAVING MEANS FOR REMOVABLY RECEIVING THE HOOK MEMBER FOR HANGING THE SHUTTER TO THE WALL, A BRACJET HAVING A FIRST PORTION FIXED TO THE WALL GENERALLY ADJACENT THE BOTTOM OF TEH SHUTTER AND HAVING A SECOND PORTION PROJECTING OUTWARDLY FROM THE WALL AND UNDERLYING THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF THE SHUTTER, SAID PROJECTING PORTION OF THE BRACKET HAVING AN ELONGATED OPENING EXTENDING GENERALLY NORMAL TO THE WALL, AND MEANS FOR SECURING THE BOTTOM OF THE SHUTTER TO THE BRACKET IN SELECTED SPACED POSITIONS FROM THE WALL INCLUDING MEANS FIXED TO THE SHUTTER DIMENSIONED TO EXTEND THROUGH THE OPENING AND TO MOVE LONGITUDINALLY THEREIN FOR PERMITTING THE SHUTTER TO BE ADJUSTED TOWARDS OR AWAY FROM THE WALL.
