METHOD OF BINDING FABRICS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,521, dated April 28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERASTUS F. BRADFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Method of Binding Fabrics, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my invention is to sew bindings to leather or other fabrics in such a manner that the bindings will be drawn snugly over the edges of the fabrics, and the edges of the bindings will be closely felled down on both faces of the fabrics by the thread or threads of the seam.

My invention is carried into effect by folding the binding over the edge of the fabric to be bound, and then securing the binding to the fabric by a seam of zigzag stitches passing.

while the binding will be drawn up snugly against the edge of the fabric, and the threads of the seam will presenta neat and ornamental appearance.

I prefer to practice my invention by means of a bindingguide adapted to receive the edge of the fabric to be bound and to fold the binding over the same, in connection with a lockstitch sewing-machine having a laterally-moving needle descending alternately in different 5 vertical planes.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a binding-guide and of the fabric and binding, showing the relative position of these parts in fold- 4o ing the binding over the edge of the fabric, the different lateral positions of the needle in sewing beingindicated by full and dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a piece of fabric bound by my method, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the same.

ric to be bound, and B the binding, which is folded over the edge of the same by means of a binding-guide, G. YVith the fabric and binding disposed as indicated in Fig. l, a sewing- 5o needle, D, is passed through the fabric inside of the binding, and then through the binding and fabric nearer to the edge of the latter than the first puncture, these operations being repeated during the continuance of the work, the stitches thus passing alternately through the fabric and through the fabric and binding and extending over the edges of the latter on both sides of the fabric. The stitches, being interlooped or interlocked in any well-known 6o manner and properly tightened, will draw the binding snugly up against the edge of the fabric, and the thread or threads of the seam passing and repassing over the edges of the binding on both sides of the fabric will closely fell the binding down upon or against the fabric.

If an increased ornamental effect is desired, the thread or threads may be of different color from the fabric and binding.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- That method of binding fabrics which consists in folding the binding snugly over the edge of the fabric and securing it thereto by a seam of stitches passing alternately through the body of the fabric inside of the binding and through the fabric and the folded binding near both edges of the latter, whereby the binding will be snugly laid over the edge of the fabric 8o and secured thereto with both of its edges closely felled down by the threads of the seam, substantially as set forth.
