FOGGER ATTACHMENT FOR GAS POWER MOWERS Filed Sept. 25, 1963 R H'YVENTOR.
"L n KENNETH MCCURLEY.
ATTORNEYS United States Patent Oflice 3,162,912 Patented Dec. 29, 1964 3,162,;72 FGGGER ATTACHMENT EEG-ilk GAS PQWER MUWERS Kenneth Ralph Mc Curley, 9191 Tan Bay, Union Lake, Mieh. Filed Sept. 25, 1963, Ser. No. 311,548 1 Qlairn. ((11. 43-429) The present invention relates to a fogger attachment for gas power mowers whereby the heat of the exhaust is employed for vaporizing a bug killer and for delivering a cloud of vaporized bug killer from the exhaust mufiler outlet.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive fogger attachment for a gas power mower wherein a container or a suitable bug killer in liquid form is suspended from the handle of the mower and conduit means and a valve are employed for metering limited amounts of liquid bug killer directly into the outlet of the muffler for vaporization and for delivery from the muffler to the atmosphere in the form of a cloud.
This and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appending drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a gas power mower incorporating the present fogger attachment.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary schematic view illustrating the detail and construction of the fogger attachment.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereinafter set forth.
General Gas Power Mower Construction The present gas power mower shown in FIG. 1 is generally designated at 11 and includes base 12, wheels 13, motor 14, and handle 15 with cross brace 16. Said motor includes the conventional and usual laterally extending outlet exhaust pipe 17, FIG. 2.
F ogger Attachment for Gas Power Mower The present fogger attachment incorporates a mufiler 18, partially broken away in FIG. 2, mounted upon the outer end of exhaust pipe 17 and includes enlarged outlet 19. The outlet end 26 of the preferably S-shaped metallic conduit 21 projects loosely within the over-sized outlet 19 of the mufiler.
The upper end of said conduit as at 22 projects into and is connected with the outlet end of flexible hose 23, whose upper open end projects over fitting 24, being an outlet fitting depending from container 25. Said hose is preferably made of rubber, artificial rubber, fabric or the like.
This container in the illustrative embodiment has a removable cover 26 including mounting clip 2'7 which receives S-shaped hook 28 suspended removably mounted over cross brace 16 forming a part of handle 15.
A manually operable regulator means is mounted on hose 23 intermediate its ends for controlling the metering or flow drop by drop of liquid stored within container 25. In the illustrative embodiment clamping device 29 is In the illustrative embodiment clamping device 29 is mounted on hose 23 and includes manually adjustable clamp 30 by which the hose is compressively engaged. This regulates the aperture therethrough and in turn the quantity of liquid which passes through said hose, preferably a drop at a time, for delivery into metallic conduit 21 and ultimately to the interior of mufiler 18, FIG. 2.
A suitable resilient means, namely a coil spring 31, is
anchored at 32, to motor 1%, fragmentarily shown, and at its other end is connected at 33 to a portion of conduit 21 intermediate its ends for maintaining an assembled relation of the outlet end 20 of conduit 21 within outlet 1? of mufiler 1%.
1n the illustrative embodiment of the invention, and for illustration, various types of bug killer fluids may be employed, as for example, kerosene or solutions containing DDT readily available on the market, or other solutions known for their toxic effect on insects and bugs.
Operation The present fogger attachment for gas power mowers is simple in its construction and thus may be easily mounted upon a conventional gas power mower as desired merely by application of hook 28 to cross brace 16 of the handle, insertion of conduit 21 at its outlet end 20 into mutller 1% and the attachment of spring 31.
In operation, with container 25 substantially full of bug killer liquid of the desired character, manipulation of hand clamp W430 limits and proportions an intermittent or drop by drop flow of liquid through the hose 23 into conduit 21 for projection by gravity into outlet 19 of mufller 18.
This metered liquid instantly vaporizes on contact with the interior walls of the mufiler and on contact with the hot exhaust gases which are delivered to the muffler from exhaust pipe 17, normally adapted for flow out through the oversized outlet 19. The iluid so vaporized mixes with the exhaust gases in the form of a cloud which then passes through the muffier outlet 19 to they immediately surrounding area.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the following claim.
I claim:
In a gas power mower having a bifurcated handle, an internal combustion engine and an exhaust pipe; the improvement comprising: a mufller connected to the exhaust pipe, extending laterally and having an apertured outlet; a container removably suspended from the handle adapted to store a quantity of liquid bug killer, and having an outlet fitting; a flexible hose at one end joined to said fitting and being open at its other end; a manually operated clamp on said hose intermediate its ends adjustably and compressively engaging said hose for regulating the flow or liquid therethrough; a metallic S shaped conduit at one end joined to the open end of said hose and and at its other end loosely projected into the mufiier outlet for delivering drops of bug killer liquid to the interior of the mufiler and in a direction opposing the flow of exhaust; a coiled spring at one end anchored to said base and at its other end retainingly engaging said conduit intermediate its ends, flexibly holding said outlet end loosely within the rnuiller outlet; a cross brace on the handle, the suspension of said container including a hook connected thereto and depending from said cross brace; the metered liquid instantaneously vaporizing on contact with the muffler and hot exhaust gases for delivering with said exhaust gases a cloud of bug killer through the mufiler outlet to the immediately surrounding area.
