' G. M. BAKER.
FASTENING FOE MEETING RAILS 0F SASHES. No. 316,219 5 Patented Apr. 21, 1885.
f WWW UNITED STATES GEORGE M. BAKER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING FOR-MEETlNG-RAlLS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,219, dated Apri121, 1885.
Application filed January 21, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BAKER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa front elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional View, partly in elevation, on line 00 x of Fig. 1, but with the keeper-cam turned around nearly into the position indicated by the broken lines in said figure; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of one part of my sash-fastener, with the knocking-out cam omitted.
A designates the hooked latch, pivoted by means of the pintle a to the lugs bb of the base-plate'A. The bulk of its weight is at the rear ofits pivot, and when turned back its heel strikes the base-plate A, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to hold the latch by its own weight in nearly a vertical position. hen this latch is turned forward for engagement with the companion part of the fastener, it passes the balancing-point just prior to engagement therewith.
B designates a side acting cam, which serves as a keeper for the hooked latch. This cam is pivoted to thekeeper-plate B so as to swing horizontally thereon. In addition to its upwardly-projecting inclined flange c, which forms the cam proper, it is provided with a knocking-out cam, d. It is also provided with an operatinghaudle, C. Its movement upon the base-plate may be limited by means of any suitable stopsas, for instance, the pin Fig. 1, on the keeper-plate and the ends of the curved sloth in the body of the keepercam, or vice versa.
When the keeper-cam is in the position illustrated in Fig. 4, the latch A may be pushed forward over the edge of the inclined flange c at the foot ofits incline, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4. The handle 0 is then forced around toward the left, so that the keepercam pulls upon the hooked latch, thereby forcing the lower sash downward and the upper sash upward, bringing them home in case they were not fully closed, and then as the strain upon the latch is exerted obliquely (see Fig. 2) it pulls the sash-rails firmly together, making a firm lock, which cannot be picked. Upon the return movement of the keeper-cam to unlock the fastener theknockingout cam (1 will strike the hooked-end of the latch just before said keeper-cam reaches the stop, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, and thereby throw the latch back out of engagement far enough to have its own weight carry and hold it back, as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 4.
The sash-fastener shown in Fig. 5 is substantially the same as that shown in the other figures, except that the knocking-out cam is omitted and the stop is slightly different. In this fastener the weight of the hook will throw it back so soon as said hook is released by the backward movement of the inclined flange c. The flange c is also longer than in the other figures, so that it will force the sashes up and down to a greater extent.
I claim as my invention 1. In a sash-fastener, in combination with a rotatable side acting cam, a hooked latch or keeper adapted to engage said cam, said hooked keeper being so pivoted in its supporting-plate that it may be swung laterally out of engagement with the cam when not in use, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the hooked latch, the side acting keeper-cam having the inclined flange for engagement with the hooked end of the latch, and the knocking-out cam, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE M. BAKER.
