DANIEL MENZIE MCLELLAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,162, :ted April 21, 1885. Application filed September 18, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL MENZIE Md LELLAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to produce a calendar which can be more cheaply manufactured than the ordinary well-known calendar of associated monthly calendar sheets, which shall be as compact in form as possible, and yet correctly indicate the number of days in each month, as well as all other facts usually embraced in the ordinary calendar. I accomplish these objects by the construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a calendar constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents that part of the calendar printed on or attached to the face of the calendar-back, and Fig. 3 represents two of the detachable monthly slips.
On the face of the calendar-back d, I print the monthly calendar for December, (see Fig. 2,) printing the name of the month and the numbers representing the year in the space a,
following the numbers representing the last three'days of said month, and the names of the days of the week in the space I), immediately below the said name and numbers. The numbers from 1 to 28, inclusive, of the December calendar I utilize for the calendars of the remaining months of the year by combining therewith a series of eleven slips, 0, one for each of the said months. On each of these monthly slips I print the names of the days of the week, month, and year, and the number or numbers, if any, representing the day or days of the month in excess of twentyeight. The slip for February, (see Fig. 3,) except in the case of leap-year, does not embrace any numbers relating to the days of the month. The slips for months having thirty days embrace only the two numbers 29 and 30. The said eleven slips, arranged in their properorder, are so placed on and secured to the calendar-back as to conceal all that part of the December calendar following the number 28,
.elsewhere, so as to be always visible.
as shown in Fig. 1. They are held in place by any suitable means, but preferably by metallic fastenings h, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that any slip may be lifted to inspect the one below, and be readily detached or torn off when the month it represents has expired. The upper edges of the slips are preferably held together by the means usually employed in the manufacture of tablets.
The construction and arrangement of parts described and represented utilizes every inch of space for printed matter relating to information furnished by a calendar, no blank space being left on the December calendar nor on the slips, and the calendar is therefore as compact in form as it is possible to produce.
The space on the calendar-back not occupied by the calendar is utilized for an advertisement; but this has, of course, no necessary connection with my invention. For a card of a given size, however, greater spacethan has heretofore been provided for an advertisement is secured by this reduction in size of the calendar.
, The December calendar, instead of being printed on the back, which is the preferred construction, may be printed on a separate sheet, and the latter attached by any suitable means to the back. Instead of printing the December calendar on the back, the twentyeight numbers only may be printed thereon, and a monthly slip for December added to the other slips.
The figures indicating the year, being the same for each month, may be omitted from the slips and placed at the top of the calendar or It is preferred, however, to place said figures on the slips, as this is the more economical construction.
It is notessential, of course, that the monthly calendar imprinted on the back should be that for December, for the monthly calendar for June or for any other month may be so placed, and the slips would represent the preceding months in their proper order. All of these several modifications are within the scope of my invention.
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A calendar consisting of a series of monthly slips having printed thereon the names of 1 series printed thereon, the name of the month the days of the Week and month, and the numbers representing the days of the month in excess 'of twenty-eight, and a back upon which said slips are attached, and so placed that the numbers from 1 to 28 imprinted on the said back shall be above the said slips, substantially as described.
2. A calendar consisting of a sheet having the monthly calendar of the last month of the series printed thereon, and of a series of slips attached thereto and placed to conceal a part of the said monthly calendar, said slips representing in proper order the several preceding months, and each having printed thereon the names of the days of the week and month, and the days of the month following the latest exposed date of the said last monthly calendar, substantially as described.
3. A calendar consisting of a sheet having the monthly calendar of the last month of the and year being printed in the space following the number representing the last day of the month, and of a series of slips attached thereto and placed to conceal a part of the said monthly calendar, said slips representing in proper order the several preceding months, and each having printed thereon the names of the days ofthe week and month, and the numbers representing the year and the days of the month following the latest exposed date of the said last monthly calendar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
H. LEWVIS, ROBERT OBYRNE.
