Martin, 801 Church St., Marion, Ohio Filed Aug. 15, 1962, Ser. No. 217,023 1 Claim. (Cl. 30294) This invention relates to a device for taking clippings from papers, magazines, and the like.

The device of the present invention comprises an unproved version of the device disclosed in my United States Letters Patent No. 2,882,599.

In general, the device of the present invention comprises a handle means provided with a detachable and disposable head means. A cutting blade and associated guide means are mounted on the disposable head means so that dull blades can be readily and inexpensively replaced.

As another aspect of the present invention the device includes a removably mounted blade guard which makes the device safe to be carried in a pocket or handbag.

As another aspect of the present invention the present device includes an improved integrally formed head means and guide which form a rigid closed ended slot through which the associated blade means is extended.

As another aspect of the present invention the present device includes a handle means, head means, and blade means all of which are substantially coaxially aligned and which cooperate, in this configuration, with a convex upturned blade guide means to provide a straight compact tool that can be operated in an inclined configuration.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved device for taking clippings from papers which includes a novel structural arrangement that forms a removable disposable cutter blade and guide means assembly.

It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved device of the type described that is of substantially straight and compact configuration.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved device of the type described that includes a blade guard which makes the device safe to be carried in a pocket or handbag.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the invention is clearly shown.

Referring in detail to the drawings FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate the device as being made up of three assembled por- 3,160,954 Patented Dec. 15, 1964 tions consisting of a head means indicated generally at 20, a handle means indicated generally at 22, and a cover means indicated generally at 24.

With reference to FIG. 3 a blade means indicated generally at 26 includes a front blade portion 28 provided with a piercing tip 30 and a rear blade portion 32 rigidly mounted in head means 20.

As is best seen in FIG. 4 head means 20 includes two integrally formed

40 and 42 that include an integrally formed toe portion or cross brace 43 that form a closed ended slot 46 through which blade means 26 is extended.

Head means 20 is removably frictionally retained in handle means 22 by a snug telescoping press fit.

As is best seen in FIG. 3 plug means 20 includes a cylindrical outer surface 50 that is frictionally engaged by an inner cylindrical surface 51 of handle means 22.

The handle means 22 includes a front portion 52 in a metal farrel 53 that fits snugly over it and reinforces the front handle portion 52 against splitting when the snug fitting head means is pressed into the handle socket formed by the surface 51.

As seen in FIG. 3 the cover means or guard 24 includes an inner cylindrical surface 54 which fits snugly over the cylindrical surface of farrel 53 and is thereby retained in position.

In operation, when the cover means 24 is removed the head means is retained in the handle means 22 by the frictional engagement of

50 and 51. The device is next disposed in the configuration of FIG. 6 with the front blade portion 28 of the blade means disposed beneath the under surface of a sheet of paper and with the lower convex edges 72 on the guide means overlying the top surface of sheet 70. In this configuration the tool is pushed and manipulated so as to sever the desired clipping from the sheet 70.

While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claim which follows.

I claim:

A tool for taking a clipping from a sheet of paper comprising in combination:

(a) handle having a socket,

(b) a head removably secured in said socket,

(c;1 a pair of parallel spaced feet extending from said ead,

(1) the outer most surfaces of said feet being coextensive with the outer surface of said head,

(2) said feet having their bases lying below the central axis of said head, coextensive with the outer surface of said head and having their extending ends curving upwardly above said central axis,

(3) said extending ends being interconnected,

(a') a cutter blade including a forward piercing tip and a knife edge adjacent said tip,

(1) said blade being Wire like and sickle shaped having a curved forward portion and a rearward shank portion,

(2) said shankbeing embedded in said head,
