LEATHER TRIMMING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,024, dated April 21,1885.

Be it known that I, FERDINAND LUDWIG ALEXANDER ERNsT, acitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leather Trimmings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which show a piece of trimming embodying my invention.

Heretofore in the manufacture of leather trimmings for furniture the trimmings were made of one skin of leather. After the leather was cut in a suitable manner in strips or strands, the strands were bunched in a suitable manner to form tassels. The tassels becoming deranged would expose the raw or undyed edges and backs of the strands.

It is the object of my invention to overcome this difficulty and to produce a leather trimming that has a double finished face.

It consists in taking two sheets or skins of leather and fastening them back to back, so as to present two faces, then slitting to form a fringe, and then, if desirable, staining the same, so as to color the edges, so that no matter how the fringe is disturbed no raw edges are visible,which is the essence of my invention.

It is obvious that I can select skins of different colors to produce different effects.

In carrying out my invention I take two finished skins of leather, either of the same or different colors, and in a suitable manner stick or fasten them back to back, so that the sheets of leather will present two finished faces, thus obviating a rough or unfinished back to the strips or strands forming the tassel or other form of trimming. Another great advantage obtained is, that where-for instance, in backing chairs-it is desired to use leather we have no rough back exposed.

Heretofore the end of the strip forming the knot was fastened by driving a tack through the end of the strip and into the body of the knot, thus exposing the head of the tack. I fasten the end of the strip forming the knot by passing the tack through the knot-strip at the back, and, turning the end inwardly, cover the head of the tack and force the tack into the body of the knot.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The improved method in the manufacture of leather trimmings, which consists of fastening two finished skins of leather back to back to produce one sheet of leather having two finished faces, then slitting the stock into an edge fringe, and then bunching the fringe in any suitable manner.

2. As an improvement in the manufacture of leather ornaments, a trimming or other ornament made of two skins or pieces of dressed leather having their finished surfaces outward, as specified.
