Rogers, 4777 Ameshury Way, tlolnmhus, tlahio Filed Sept. 13, 1963, Ser. No. 383,770 4 Ciaims. ((31. 93-15) My invention relates to a device for rounding the corners of various types of paper or card stock. particularly useful for rounding the corners of sheets of paper, cards or similar paper items disposed in a pack or group in face-to-face contact but is capable of rounding the corners of other items arranged inpacks, stacks, or groups.
The present invention provides for the purpose indicated an extremely simple machine or device which can be manufactured at low cost and which can be operated with a minimum of skilled labor.
My device provides a holder for the stock and a cutter associated therewith which will successively engage the sheets or cards as they and the cutter are moved relatively into association. The cutter revolves in a plane perpendicular to the face of the oncoming sheets of stock about an axis extending in the direction of the plane of the sheets. The plane of revolution of the cutter intersects the angle of the adjacent edges of the sheets of stock. The cutter is provided with a cutting edge having a radius or curve transversely of its plane of movement. Contact of the cutter with each succes sive sheet will round the corner thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated the preferred form of machine embodying my invention but it is to be understood that variations may be made with-- out departing from the basic principle of my. invention.- 7
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric View of a machine embodying my invention.
FIGURE 2 is a vertical, transverse, sectional view taken along line 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged, schematic, transverse sectional view illustrating how the cutter removes the corner of a sheet of stock.
FIGURE 4 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view.
It is ship of the adjacentedges of the sheets of stock. The
holder is supported on the table 16 with its guide walls 13 at an angle relative thereto, in this instance, being at 45 relative to the upper surface of the table. Thus,
there is provided a V-shaped holder or guide for re- 1 is provided in the table 10 directly below the slot 14.
A cutter member 16 has a cutting edge projecting upwardly through the slot 15 into the slot 14 and upwardly slightly beyond the vertex, which is indicated at V in FIGURE 3 where the inner guide surfaces of the-walls 13 would meet if continued and if the slot 14 were not provided.
In the example shown, I have illustrated the cutter 16 as being in the form of a circular saw blade which rotates about the axis 17 of the drive shaft of the motor 11. This blade is of disc-like form with peripherally projecting teeth. The teeth of this saw blade tare ground with a transverseradius 18 corresponding to the curve to beimparted to each sheet of stock at its corner. How ever, this is merely a convenient form of cutter and it is to be understood that other cutters may be substituted since the cutter merely needs to provide a cutting edge revolving about an axis extending in the direction of the planes of the sheets of stock, at a right angle to the slot 14, and revolving in a plane perpendicular to the faces of the sheets. the guide Walls or portions 13 of the holder 12, such portions being at a relative angle corresponding to the angle of the adjacent edges of the sheets. are at right angles, the guide portions 13-will be correspondingly at a right angle and the plane of rotation of the cutter will bisect the angle.
In using this device, it is merely necessary to position the stock in the holder at the vertex thereof. Then the stock is moved along into association with the cutter 16 so that each sheet is successively engaged by the cutter at its corner. -However, if desired, the cutter 16 may traverse the holder 12 in an elongated slot corresponding to the slot 14. The axis of rotation 17 of the cutter 16 extends in a direction at a right angle relativeto the direction of movement of the stock into association with the cutter. This position will remove the portion of the corner of each sheet indicated by the dotted lines in FIGURE 3, this removed portion being the portion which extends down into the slot 14.
It will be apparent that this invention provides a siniple, inexpensive device for performing a difiicult operaa receiving and holding the stock, said holder having guide portions at an angle corresponding to the angle of the adjacent edges of the sheets of stock at the corner to v be rounded for receiving said stock, a cutting member at the angle between the guide portions and extending into. the holder within the angularly related guide portions, said cutter being movable in a plane intersecting the angle at its vertex and having-a cutting edge which is curved transversely of said plane, said plane beingperpendicular to the plane of the sheets of stock, and means for traversing the holder and cutter relatively.
2. A device according to claim 1 in which the stock has its adjacent edges at right angles and the guide portions of the holder are at right angles, said plane of the cutter bisecting the angle between the guide portions.
3. A device according to claim 1 in which'the cutting edge revolves about an axis disposed transversely of the holder in a plane at a right angle to said slot.
4. A device according to claim 3 in which the-cutter is in the form of a disc-like saw blade with peripheral teeth, the teeth-being curved transversely.
