MOP-HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,586, dated March 5, 1861.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. AXE, of Beloit, in the county of Rock, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mop-Sticks; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this application.

My invention relates to a novel method of constructing mops or mop sticks and has for its objects a more economic and serviceable apparatus than has been heretofore made and one which is more easily managed than any now in use possessing the same advantages with mine; and to these ends my invention consists in the employment on the end of a stick of two removable jaw pieces, one provided with a needle bar, and both adjusted and secured in concavities or bearing surfaces in the end of the stick, by a single thumb screw as will be hereinafter fully described.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of my improved mop stick, referring by letters and figures to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of one of my improved apparatuses. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section through the center of the same. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the apparatus with the cloth or mop extricated and the jaws showing in a position ready to put on the cloth, or mop material, and Fig. 4, is a cross section at Fig. l, showing the concave bearing surfaces in the end of the stick.

At one end of this stick are cut away on opposite sides, portions thereof, as illustrated at Figs. 2, 3, and 4, so as to form concave bearing surfaces, for the shanks of the jaws, a, and, b, which it will be observed are made convex in a cross section so as to fit into `the cavities or recesses 1 and 2, formed (as just described) in the end of stick, A, in such manner as that while held in said cavities the said shanks cannot turn or twist.

B, is a set screw which holds the jaws a and b in a fixed position relatively with each other and with stick, A, when desired.

C, is the cloth or mop which may be of any of the materials used for such purposes and which is threaded on a needle or pointed bar, c, which extends out from one of the jaws, a, in such manner (as shown in the drawing) as to have its point closed into a hole or depression in the other jaw b, when the jaws with the material, C, arranged on needle, c, are locked in position by screw, B, as shown at Figs. 1 and 2.

The hole at 3 to receive the needle, c, should be so made as that the bearing of jaw, should come on Vthe taper of needle, c, and allow the point of the latter to pass through the hole.

By the foregoing in Vconnection with the drawing it will be seen and readily comprehended that by simply turning the screw in the proper direction to release the jaws a, and, b, from confinement they will both be free to swivel as illustrated at Fig. 3, when the mop C, may be readily extricated or placed on (by running the needle, c, through it) and also that when the mop, C, is threaded onto needle, c, by simply turning the thumb screw, B, in an opposite direction the whole apparatus will be adjusted and its several parts firmly secured together ready for use.

By constructing the apparatus as herein described a mop stick is furnished which is exceedingly simple, economic, effective, durable, and easily managed.

I am aware of various modications of constructions already known and patented, and that in some instances the mop or cloth has been arranged, on a bar, a roll retained between wire jaws; but my invention differs materially from such apparatuses.

Having described the nature of my invention and mode in which I have practiced the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
